Discover Edelstal
Accommodation in Edelstal
Edelstal lies in the foothills of the Little Carpathians. Its viticultural tradition, archaeological finds and the route to Spitzerberg give the village its distinctive character. For planning your trip, these can be divided into three themes: landscape, local history and a signposted cycling tour. Whether you focus on a walking route, historical traces or a cycling route depends on what matters to you during your stay.
Landscape and hiking trail
The trail’s gentle ascent leads to the biodiverse Spitzerberg nature reserve. The ascent also offers panoramic views across the southern Vienna Basin. The trail therefore has two clear landscape highlights: the nature reserve as its destination and the view across the basin. In some places along the hiking trail, remnants of the walls of the former Esterházy game park are still visible. The fallow deer enclosure was built in the mid-18th century; the surviving wall remnants recall this former use. If you are interested in the connection between landscape and history, you will find both along the same hiking trail.
Archaeological traces and church architecture
Archaeological finds also offer a glimpse into the village’s history. During excavations in Edelstal in 1884, the Hungarian researcher Söter discovered the remains of a Roman villa. During the same excavations, he also uncovered part of an Avar cemetery. The two finds come from the same excavations, but they remain distinct archaeological traces. St Edelstal Parish Church offers another perspective on the village’s history. Its entrance features a Baroque gable flanked by stone pinecones. This architectural detail complements the archaeological traces with a specific design feature of the church building.
Viticultural tradition and Römerquelle
Viticulture is also part of the village’s long history. Edelstal’s first municipal seal dates from 1709 and depicts two grapevines and a pruning knife. This particular combination points to the village’s long viticultural tradition. Water is another local feature: a spring south of Edelstal has been bubbling for centuries and is marketed by Römerquelle. Römerquelle mineral water is bottled directly at the spring in Edelstal. The mineral water has carried the Austria Gütezeichen quality seal since 1962. The distinction between the local themes is clear: the municipal seal represents the viticultural tradition; the spring, bottling and quality seal belong to the history of Römerquelle mineral water.
Explore by bike
The Hundsheimer Berge Tour is another specific option for a cycling trip. It can be ridden in either direction and is signposted. The route passes through Hundsheim to Edelstal, where it joins the main loop of the Hundsheimer Berge Tour again. This clearly distinguishes the cycling tour from the trail to Spitzerberg: the hike focuses on the gentle ascent, the nature reserve and the panorama; for the cycling tour, information about the direction, signage and connection to the main loop will help you plan.
