Discover Ohio: Nature, History and Music
Accommodation in Ohio
Ohio offers a range of themes to shape your travel plans: hiking trails and scenic routes, historical topics, music, and a culinary selection centered on ice cream. The Ohio History Connection oversees more than 50 historic sites and museums in 40 counties. Operations can vary from site to site, so check information about your destination before visiting.
Hiking Trails and Scenic Routes
Ohio has eight National Park Service sites, two national long-distance trails, and one National Heritage Area. Designations may change in the future, so check current information for specific destinations. Cuyahoga Valley National Park offers trails to explore. At John Bryan Park, the North Rim Trail is 2.1 miles long and designated as a hiking trail. The distance gives you a useful guide for planning; check trail conditions before your trip.
Scenic routes can also be the focus of a trip. A 2021 state fact sheet lists 27 state-designated Scenic Byways that connect cities through rural areas and small towns; designations may change. The Hocking Hills Scenic Byway runs through the hills and valleys of southeastern Ohio. Check the route and signage before driving. The Ohio & Erie Canalway can be explored on trails, by train, and along Scenic Byways; individual offerings may vary.
History in a Variety of Places
Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park presents the history of aviation and the life of poet Paul Laurence Dunbar. This brings together technological history and the life of a literary figure—a noteworthy combination if you are interested in both subjects.
When planning a visit to Hopewell Culture National Historical Park, you can take two offerings of different lengths into account: the visitor center at Mound City Group features a 19-minute orientation film. The walk through the Mound City Group Earthwork and nature trail is 1 mile in total. Check in advance whether the visitor center is currently open and the film is being shown; trail conditions may also vary.
The Inscription Rock Petroglyphs are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Seasonal access depends on weather and ferry service: during the season, the petroglyphs can be reached daily in suitable weather via the Kelleys Island Ferry from Marblehead. Check ferry service before your trip.
Music and Regional Treats
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame puts music and artists in the spotlight. Live performances are also part of the offerings. If you have a specific date in mind, check the events calendar before your trip.
For a sweet break, the Ohio Ice Cream Trail offers a complete list of ice cream shops in Ohio to try. Individual businesses and their participation may change, so check information about the specific shop in advance.
