Seneca County combines natural areas and trails with glass history, museums, and regional experiences. You can focus your trip on outdoor activities, historical collections, or a mix of different themes. Tiffin and Fostoria offer different cultural points of interest, while parks, riverbanks, and nature preserves round out the options.

Experience Nature: Trails, Water, and Open Spaces

The Seneca County Park District includes twelve parks, 25 miles of trails, and 902 acres of wilderness. The district offers a variety of programs year-round for different age groups, including nighttime hikes. At Garlo Heritage Nature Preserve, fields, wetlands, and deciduous forests spread across 292 acres. There are 7.4 miles of improved horseback riding and hiking trails—a good option if you’d like to explore the landscape on foot or on horseback.

Several miles of paved trails for hiking and biking wind through Hedges-Boyer Park. The Rock Creek Trail begins there and leads to downtown Tiffin. The park also has a 10,000-square-foot inclusive playground for children of all abilities. This means paved trails and a designated play area offer different ways to spend time outdoors alongside Garlo’s longer hiking and horseback riding trails.

Abbott’s Bridge Scenic River Access lies on the north side of the Sandusky River. The site covers more than 29 acres and includes 0.68 miles of river access. A canoe launch, fishing opportunities, wildlife viewing, a paved trail, and access for small boats make it an appealing spot if you’d like to combine river activities with time by the water.

Glass and Local History in Tiffin

The Tiffin Glass Museum displays more than 1,000 pieces of Tiffin Glass, arranged chronologically in oak cabinets. The chronological layout gives the collection a clear structure. The Seneca County Museum presents local history in a different way, through artifacts, photographs, and community stories.

For a self-guided overview of several forms of public culture, the Tiffin-Seneca Heritage Festival’s historical tour connects museums, art galleries, monuments, and public art in downtown Tiffin. A statue in Tiffin honors Native Americans and soldiers who were present during the construction of Fort Ball in the War of 1812. Tiffin is located on the Sandusky River, which flows into Lake Erie, about 55 miles southeast of Toledo.

Fostoria: Glass, Railroads, and Collections

The Glass Heritage Gallery in Fostoria preserves the local glassmaking history through glassware and lamps produced by twelve companies in Fostoria, Ohio, between 1887 and 1920. The main museum of the Fostoria Area Historical Society features a collection spanning topics from the John B. Rogers Producing Company and Governor Charles Foster to Victorian life. The Whittier School and a 1918 Allen Motor Car are also among the subjects on display. The museum is housed in Fostoria’s oldest public building; its original section was built in 1875.

The Fostoria Iron Triangle Rail Park offers a different focus: the five-acre site lies within three double-track freight main lines. From the observation platform, with its 360-degree view, visitors can watch more than 60 trains pass through Fostoria each day. The railroad setting offers a distinctly different theme from the museums’ glass and local history.

More Experiences and Regional Cuisine

The Living Village at the Tiffin-Seneca Heritage Festival depicts historical periods from the 1800s through 1949. The program includes reenactors, craft demonstrations, period music, food, and entertainment for children. The American Civil War Museum of Ohio presents its exhibits through artifacts, dioramas, mannequins, audiovisual aids, hands-on activities, and information panels. A 20-minute film titled “Ohio’s Role in the Civil War” is shown free of charge.

The Ritz Theatre hosts touring productions, dance, comedy, family performances, community theater, and appearances by national headliners. For a culinary tour, the Slice of Seneca County Pizza Trail leads to local pizzerias throughout the county. You can sample pizza-inspired specialties and collect passport stickers. This lets you plan your trip around performances, regional cuisine, and museum visits as distinct areas of interest.
