Nature, canal history, and local traditions shape the many sides of Coshocton County as a destination. Discover garden trails, historic sites, and outdoor experiences—and make culture, scenery, or seasonal events the focus of your trip, depending on your interests.

Gardens, Water, and Trails

Clary Gardens is a 20-acre botanical garden with rolling hills, a forest trail, sandstone outcrops, and ponds. The Storybook Trail winds among native and exotic plants, passing through garden paths and natural landscape features. Here, botanical sights combine with a walk through the garden landscape.

Wills Creek lies south of Coshocton and can be reached via Routes 83 and 93. The area includes 900 acres of water and 2,830 acres of land. Hunting and fishing are available there; the area spans Coshocton and Muskingum Counties. The Conesville and Simco Wildlife Area also offers fishing, with more than 100 lakes and ponds as well as an area with horseback riding trails.

The Lake Park Recreation Complex includes walking and biking paths, hiking trails, fishing, camping, an Aquatic Center, and a playground. Check facility operations before your visit. Another activity is the Coshocton Ring Trail, which offers free, family-friendly geocaching year-round. The experience includes 45 caches in the county; this number may change, so it’s worth checking the latest trail details.

When exploring the trails, it’s worth distinguishing between the different descriptions: The Three Rivers Bikeway added 1.2 miles of paved trail to the Towpath Trail in Lake Park and connects downtown Coshocton with the Lake Park District. The Three Rivers Ride, by contrast, is designed for drivers and motorcyclists and features 105 miles of unpaved roads throughout the county.

Canal History and Culture

Historic Roscoe Village is a restored 19th-century village. It was once a bustling port on the Ohio and Erie Canal. The seasonal, horse-drawn canal boat Monticello III travels along a restored original stretch of the canal. The ride lasts 45 minutes, covers one mile of the canal, and includes commentary on life along the canal. Check operating dates before your trip.

At Triple Locks Park, also known as REACT Memorial Park, visitors can walk along part of the canal bed and see the masonry of the restored locks. Check local conditions before your visit. The Triple Locks Theater in Historic Roscoe Village presents music and theater performances throughout the year; individual productions and schedules vary.

The Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum presents several historical perspectives. The Historic Ohio exhibit covers the history of the Coshocton region from first contact with Indigenous peoples through the 1860s. The Native American Exhibit includes prehistoric tools and projectile points found directly in Coshocton County; exhibit contents may change following future renovations. Young explorers can also enjoy an interactive cave experience modeled on Nicholas Miller’s cave shelter, with hides, games, and hands-on tools.

Other sites recall the county’s history and community life: Helmick Covered Bridge was originally built in 1863 and restored in 1996. County residents built the Coshocton County Courthouse in 1875. The Coal Miners Memorial honors all coal miners, their families, and the companies involved in past and present eras of coal mining in Coshocton County, Ohio.

The Gospel Hill Lighthouse stands on a hill along County Road 24, overlooking the surrounding valleys and forests. The 65-foot inland lighthouse is described as the largest in the country and was built by Gospel Hill Ministries. Admission is free; it is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and at other times by appointment. Check opening hours before traveling.

The Coshocton County Fair has been a local tradition since 1851. Its program includes agricultural exhibits, livestock barns, traditional racing programs, evening entertainment, and a midway.
