Mercer County is home to Ohio’s largest inland lake. Its history and culture span subjects from battles of the Northwest Indian War to the lives of 19th-century settlers. Church architecture, nature watching and activities on the water also offer ideas for planning a trip.

Battle History and Church Architecture

Fort Recovery was the site of two battles of the Northwest Indian War, fought in 1791 and 1794. The Fort Recovery Museum displays artifacts from both battles as well as two reconstructed 18th-century blockhouses. A self-guided tour of the battlefield passes 15 informational markers along the way. The Fort Recovery Monument is a 101-foot, 4-inch obelisk; the remains of some of the people killed in the two battles lie beneath its base.

Scheduled guided outdoor battlefield tours are also available on the second Sunday of each month from May through October. As the seasonal schedule may change, check the date before your trip. The history of Fort Recovery points to events in 1791 and 1794; the Maria Stein Heritage Museum, by contrast, focuses on the mid-to-late 19th century.

The Maria Stein Heritage Museum presents the early settlement of the southern parts of Ohio’s Auglaize and Mercer counties in six galleries. It focuses on the lives of the predominantly German-descended, Roman Catholic settlers and the period when they settled there. The Land of the Cross-Tipped Churches region is in western Ohio; its center is near Maria Stein in Mercer County. Its landscape is shaped by a high concentration of large Catholic churches. Church art also includes the Relic Chapel, which houses one of the largest collections of relics in the United States.

Other historic names point to different subjects: the Riley, Calvin E., House, also known as the Mercer County Historical Museum, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The Rockford Historical Museum is located at 151 Columbia St. in Rockford, Ohio. Its opening hours may change, so check the latest information before visiting.

Grand Lake St. Marys and Outdoor Nature

Grand Lake St. Marys was originally created as a hand-dug feeder reservoir for the Miami & Erie Canal. Today, boating and fishing are among the activities available there. The lake has five state-operated boat ramps, as well as additional private ramps at marinas; check that these access points are available before your trip. Grand Lake St. Marys State Park has 52 miles of shoreline, access for boating and fishing, a family campground, a swimming pool and picnic areas. Lakeshore Marina on the lake offers boat slips, boat rentals, a campground and a convenience store.

Those who prefer to explore on foot or by bike have several options. Baker Woods State Nature Preserve includes forests and wetlands. Wildflowers bloom there in spring, and the area is also suitable for birdwatching. Bloom times and wildlife sightings may vary by season. Franklin Township maintains a 6.5-mile bike trail from South Shore Zuma Park to Strasburg Nature Park. Trail conditions may change, so it’s a good idea to check them before setting out.

Celina’s park system also offers a range of activities: it includes five parks totaling more than 124 acres. Amenities include boat docks, playgrounds, a skate park, bike and hiking trails, sports fields and restrooms. Which ones interest you will depend on whether you want to spend time by the water, get active or plan a visit to a park.

Events and Trip Planning

Taste of Celina is a July block party with a car show in downtown Celina. The program features specialties from local restaurants, as well as beer and wine tastings. If you want to plan your visit around the event, check the date and program in advance, as both may change.

When looking for a hotel in Mercer County, you can start by considering which themes you want your stay to focus on: battle history, church and settlement history, or time by the water and in nature. Seasonal tours and events call for different timing than visits to parks or museums. Plan around the specific experiences that interest you, and check the relevant dates or conditions in advance.
