Gallia County: History and Nature on the Ohio River
Accommodation in Gallia County
Gallia County lies on the Ohio River among the gently rolling hills of southeastern Ohio. French settlers, known as the French 500, founded the county in 1790. In Gallipolis, theaters, museums and recurring events shape the cultural scene; waterways, natural areas and trails offer other ways to explore the region. You can plan your trip around culture, landscapes or outdoor activities.
Cultural history and programs
The Ariel Opera House is a theater dating to 1895 in Gallipolis’s historic district on the Ohio River. The Ohio Valley Symphony is the resident orchestra of the Ariel-Ann Carson Dater Performing Arts Centre. The Ariel’s offerings include a five-concert subscription series, a children’s chorus, community theater and a string program for music education. If you’re planning to attend a concert, check the season’s schedule.
The Our House Tavern was founded in 1819 by Henry Cushing and his sister, Elizabeth Cushing Foster. The Our House Museum displays the jacket General Lafayette left behind during his visit in 1825. The museum also includes a summer kitchen and a Tavern Room. Both a historic artifact and rooms in the house are highlights here.
The French Art Colony is housed in Riverby, a Greek Revival house built in 1855. Its art program serves children and young people from preschool age through the teen years and beyond. It also offers art classes for adults, exhibitions and annual events. The John Gee Black Historical Center preserves African American traditions, crafts, music and art in southeastern Ohio. The library at the Madog Center for Welsh Studies includes rare Welsh books, Bibles, hymnals, genealogical family information and travel information.
Local history also includes railroads and African American heritage. The Gallipolis Railroad Freight Station Museum explores the railroad history of southeastern Ohio through memorabilia, a period-furnished freight office, a working telegraph and model trains built by local hobbyists. The Lambert Lands Memorial commemorates thirty formerly enslaved people freed through the will of Charles Lambert Jr. In 1843, they moved north, crossed the Ohio River and settled on 365.5 acres in Morgan Township in Gallia County. At Mound Hill Cemetery, also called Fortification Hill, lie at least two founders of the French 500; a plaque at the cemetery gate also lists thirty Revolutionary War soldiers buried in the county.
Nature, water and trails
Crown City Wildlife Area is managed for nature-based recreation. A June 2025 status report from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources notes that it has Ohio’s largest known population of King Rails on public land. At Tycoon Lake State Wildlife Area, largemouth bass, sunfish, catfish and crappie are among the fish of interest to anglers. Facilities include numerous parking spaces, shoreline access, a boat ramp, primitive camping and a wheelchair-accessible fishing pier.
Raccoon Creek County Park encompasses 700 acres of natural areas and recreational facilities in the foothills of southeastern Ohio. Rio Grande Reservoir lies on a tributary of Indian Creek in Gallia County and has a short stretch of shoreline trail. These places complement the cultural offerings with different ways to enjoy the landscape and recreation.
The two trails differ in both length and character, offering options for hiking and biking. Gatewood Trail System has 15 miles of narrow trails for hiking and mountain biking. The 8.5-mile Gallia County Hike & Bike Trail follows a former railroad corridor between Bidwell and Gallipolis on the Ohio River, mostly through agricultural land. In Gallipolis, parking for this trail is available at Haskins Memorial Park near Ohio Avenue; in Bidwell, roadside parking is available.
