Riverbend Recreation Area puts wildlife and nature observation in the spotlight. The park covers 129 acres and is a unique wildlife habitat. Visitors can watch and photograph birds; the grounds also include a multi-use loop trail and nature trails. This combines exploring the landscape with practical opportunities to experience it attentively.

Landscapes and Trails

Litzenberg Memorial Woods offers a different landscape: The area covers 227.7 acres of rolling countryside, wooded ravines, wetlands and prairie. Its variety of terrain makes it appealing to anyone who wants to experience nature as more than a single backdrop. In the Homestead area, the McKinnis House, built in 1847, and the historic garden add a distinct historical touch to the landscape.

The waterways also offer different experiences. The Blanchard River Water Trail is 37.6 miles long and designated a State Water Trail by the ODNR. It has eleven public access points and allows paddlers to explore rural areas of Hancock County. The Old Mill Stream Scenic Byway, by contrast, runs for 52 miles through Hancock and Putnam counties. While the Water Trail is described as a water route for paddlers, the Byway passes through two counties: The two names represent different regional routes and distances.

History, Art and Railroads

The Hancock Historical Museum was founded in 1970 by five Findlay residents to preserve the heritage of Hancock County. On the museum grounds, the Little Red Schoolhouse offers a vivid glimpse into rural education: The brick building is a one-room schoolhouse from the 1840s, where schoolchildren can experience a 19th-century school day. Another building, the log cabin from the 1840s, is used to share and interpret the pioneering history of Findlay.

Art takes center stage at the Mazza Museum: Its six galleries display more than 300 works of art at any given time. Northwest Ohio Railroad Preservation, by contrast, appeals to railroad enthusiasts on different scales. Its offerings include rides on a quarter-scale railroad, a museum, model railroad layouts and full-size railroad equipment exhibits. The subject matter thus ranges from small models and the quarter-scale railroad to full-size equipment.

The Historic Homes Walking Tour is a self-guided route past restored Victorian homes and other historic buildings in downtown Findlay. The homes are privately owned; the tour passes by them. Together with the schoolhouse and log cabin, the tour offers another perspective on the area’s built history, although these places do not represent the same era or function.

Local Products

The Hancock County Farmers’ Market brings together local growers, bakers and makers every week. Products and specialties on offer include freshly harvested produce, homemade specialties, flavorful jams and warm, freshly baked bread. The seasonal program may change, so check the current dates before visiting. When planning your trip, you can consider the market as a distinct culinary highlight alongside the nature and cultural attractions that define Hancock.
