Wetlands, woodland trails and riverside landscapes shape many of the nature experiences in Sandusky County. At Blue Heron Reserve, created wetlands and damp woodlands provide habitat for migrating warblers and waterfowl. The 160-acre preserve lies on the edge of the Lake Erie marshes and is part of the Lake Erie Birding Trail. Those interested in birdwatching can also find seasonal opportunities elsewhere: In spring and fall, the riverside corridor at Creek Bend Farm offers opportunities for birdwatching.

Wetlands, Woodlands and Riverbanks

Doug Haubert Wetland is a created wetland that provides habitat for migrating waterfowl, particularly in spring and fall. Creek Bend Farm offers a different combination of landscapes: More than two miles of trails pass through riverside, field and woodland habitats, as well as cultivated farmland. Christy Farm Nature Preserve encompasses 151 acres of woodland and wetland areas. Together, these places showcase different habitats without requiring you to focus on just one type of landscape.

The waterfront setting also defines some nature destinations. Wolf Creek Park lies along the Sandusky River and offers opportunities for birdwatching. For an outing with a different activity, consider White Star Quarry, where scuba diving is possible. A 0.8-mile trail runs around the quarry. The trail length provides a useful guide for planning, but on its own does not indicate how long the walk will take.

Loops and Longer Routes

The trails vary in length and character. A mowed loop trail crosses a small prairie on the grounds of Tea Kaufman Homestead. The Woods at the Luscombe Farm offers a one-mile loop through a 55-acre woodland. Both loops offer a different focus from the 28-mile section of the North Coast Inland Trail in Sandusky County, a multi-use trail between Elmore and Bellevue. This lets you choose between a short loop through a particular landscape and a considerably longer route.

For a drive focused on regional history, take the Sandusky County Historic Barn Mural Trail. This self-guided tour visits six barns, about a hundred years old, decorated with murals depicting local history. The Sandusky County Historic Barn Mural Driving Trail is just under 40 miles long; the drive from start to finish is estimated to take about an hour. Its length and approximate duration help distinguish this tour from shorter trails and walks when planning your time.

Historic Sites and Getting Around

Historic sites include Mull Covered Bridge. Built in 1851 by the Henry Mull family, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The bridge can be reserved, but parking is very limited. Keep both details in mind when planning a visit. In Fremont, the Sandusky County Historical Society also provides a downloadable brochure for the “Fremont Walking Tour.” You can include the walk as another cultural and historical highlight in your plans.

Another piece of local history can be found at Christy Farm Nature Preserve: A cabin there was built in 1936 by the Christy family and the Kiwanis Club of Fremont. The cabin adds a specific historical detail to the natural setting. A visit to the preserve therefore combines woodland and wetland areas with the history of the structure.

Several transportation links help you get around the county: the Ohio Turnpike (I-80/90), nearby I-75 and nine other highways serve Sandusky County. Sandusky County Regional Airport provides services for private aircraft, business aircraft and air taxis. The Lake Erie Islands and Cedar Point Amusement Park are also near Sandusky County, each less than a 30-minute drive away. This drive time is an approximate planning guide.
