Ontario: World Heritage, Nature and Niagara Experiences
Accommodation in Ontario
Discover Ontario through a range of experiences: UNESCO World Heritage along the Rideau Canal, canoe routes in Algonquin Provincial Park and wildlife viewing in Point Pelee National Park sit alongside historic sites and attractions at Niagara Falls. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether waterways, birdwatching, cultural heritage or experiences at Niagara Falls are your priority.
World Heritage, Canoe Routes and a Bike Trail
The Rideau Canal is one of Canada’s 20 World Heritage Sites and one of two such sites in Ontario. It runs between Ottawa and Kingston in the south of the province. This brings together the UNESCO designation and a specific route through Ontario.
Algonquin Provincial Park has a network of canoe routes stretching more than 2,000 kilometres. The Old Railway Bike Trail offers a different scale: it is 16 km long and suitable for all ages. The comparison highlights the difference between a network of canoe routes and the stated length of a particular bike trail. Which activity better suits your plans depends on whether you want to focus on canoe routes or a cycling route.
Bird Migration and Landscapes
Point Pelee National Park is the southernmost point of mainland Canada and lies in the so-called Carolinian Zone. It is also one of the best inland places to watch bird migration. More than 390 bird species have been recorded in the Point Pelee Birding Area; this number may be updated. The national park’s distinctive geographic location and birdwatching are two specific aspects of the area.
Bruce Peninsula National Park offers a different landscape. It is the core protected area of the Niagara Escarpment UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The Bruce Peninsula landscape includes lakes, rocky shores, cliffs, caves, dunes, wetlands and forest. Here, a variety of landforms define the focus on nature, while Point Pelee stands out in particular for its location and bird migration.
History and Experiences at Niagara Falls
Niagara Parks Power Station features repurposed artifacts, interpretive exhibits and interactive installations about the history of one of the world’s first hydroelectric power plants. For more than a century, it harnessed the power of water to generate electricity. At Journey Behind the Falls, visitors descend 125 feet through the rock and explore 130-year-old tunnels behind Niagara Falls. The two experiences have different focuses: hydroelectric history on the one hand, and the descent and tunnels on the other.
Niagara City Cruises offers the 20-minute Voyage to the Falls boat tour, with views of the Niagara Gorge, the American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and the Canadian Horseshoe Falls. Along the banks of the Niagara River, the White Water Walk features a quarter-mile-long boardwalk. The historic Whirlpool Aero Car takes visitors across the Niagara Gorge and offers views of the Niagara Whirlpool and Class 6 rapids. You can consider these as distinct experiences: a boat tour with a stated duration, a riverside boardwalk with a stated length and a ride across the gorge.
Historic Sites and a Family-Friendly Experience
Fort George National Historic Site is in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, where musket demonstrations are offered. The Butterfly Conservatory is a family-friendly experience for self-guided exploration, featuring 45 butterfly species from around the world. While Fort George focuses on history through its musket demonstrations, the Conservatory centres on exploring the butterfly species at your own pace.
Culinary Experiences
Culinary routes and festivals are also among Ontario’s experiences, and the province offers other culinary options as well. This culinary focus complements the ways to discover Ontario through landscapes, wildlife viewing and cultural heritage.
