Haliburton County: Nature Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Haliburton County
Haliburton County offers multi-use trails, seasonal outdoor activities, and a range of cultural attractions. If you’re planning a stay, it’s worth aligning your travel dates with the activities you’re interested in: trail use rules vary by route and season, while some museums limit visits to specific periods.
Trails and Activities by Season
The Haliburton County Rail Trail is maintained by the County’s Public Works Department and is a multi-use trail. From April 1 to May 1, it is open for non-motorized activities, provided trail conditions allow. The same condition applies from May 1 to November 30; during this period, ATVs are also permitted with a permit. From December 1 to March 31, when conditions are suitable, the trail is open exclusively to snowmobiles with a permit. Side-by-sides are not permitted. Haliburton County also has multi-use trails for hikers, cyclists, paddlers, and snowmobilers, so the Rail Trail rules should not be applied across the board to other routes.
At the Haliburton Sculpture Forest, an outdoor collection of sculptures by Canadian and international artists, the activities listed vary by season: in spring, summer, and fall, the trails are suitable for hiking and cycling; in winter, for hiking, snowshoeing, and skiing. The Sculpture Forest is located in Glebe Park near the town of Haliburton. The park on the north shore of Head Lake covers 175 acres of forest and gently rolling hills. Its trail network is intended for hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. Check current conditions before setting out, particularly for winter trail use.
Barnum Creek Nature Reserve encompasses a variety of habitats, including hardwood and mixed forests, young successional forests, grassland, marsh, and swamp. Three hiking trails cover a total of seven kilometres; open fields and Barnum Creek also shape the area. Activities include hiking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, plein air painting, photography, and birdwatching. Cycling is restricted to the Heritage Hike. The landscape and activity rules make it worthwhile to check the permitted use on site rather than assuming it applies from one trail to the next.
Other trail options round out the selection: the Dorset Scenic Tower Trail in Algonquin Highlands is a challenging 1.5-kilometre loop. Abbey Gardens has about five kilometres of marked trails through 140 acres of mature forest that can be explored free of charge year-round. For both destinations, check current trail conditions before your visit.
Museums, Art, and Local History
The Minden Hills Cultural Centre comprises the Minden Hills Museum and Heritage Village, the Agnes Jamieson Gallery, and Nature’s Place Interpretive Centre. The museum includes five historic buildings that were relocated here to preserve and celebrate Minden’s history. These include Bowron House, a log cabin from the 1860s with a working wood stove, the Stanhope Schoolhouse, and exhibits in the Stirling Bank building.
The Minden Hills Museum offers self-guided tours from the Victoria Day long weekend through the Thanksgiving weekend, Tuesday to Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Hands-on activities are available daily in June, July, and August. As seasonal dates and offerings may change, it’s a good idea to check current visitor information before your visit.
Nature’s Place was built in 2007 and originally designed to minimize its environmental impact. The Agnes Jamieson Gallery preserves and presents the life, work, and artistic legacy of André Lapine, ARCA (1866–1952), and showcases visual art by local and regional artists. The Haliburton Highlands Museum offers another focus: its main gallery is open year-round and features exhibitions on early local businesses, sports history, and the local lumber industry.
Choose Travel Dates to Match
Seasonal information does not apply equally to every attraction. On the Rail Trail, dates, trail conditions, and, where applicable, a permit determine which uses are allowed; at the Sculpture Forest, the activities listed change with the seasons. At the Minden Hills Museum, seasonal opening days and summer activities set the timeframe for a visit. If you’d like to combine several interests, compare these conditions for your travel dates and check current trail and visitor information before setting out.
Fully guided adventure packages are also available in Haliburton County for individuals, couples, and small groups, including one- and multi-day options. The availability of specific packages may change, so check the options for your travel dates.
