Dufferin County, Ontario, is well suited to a stay that includes hiking, cycling routes and visits to smaller towns. If you’re looking for a hotel, choose your preferred starting point within the county before comparing room offers. The county spans several towns; a hotel name with a regional reference does not establish that it is a short distance from a particular park or trailhead.

Woods, cliffs and a lake

Dufferin County Forest consists of several separate areas and covers a total of 1,066 hectares. A single “forest parking lot” cannot serve as the starting point for every forest outing. Mono Cliffs Provincial Park is in the Township of Mono, within Dufferin County, and has numerous hiking trails. For travellers who want to hike there for several days, the actual connection between their hotel and the access points they want to use matters. A hotel in another community in the county may be just as suitable if the planned journey to the trails works for you; the county name alone does not make it possible to determine a fixed travel time.

Island Lake Conservation Area is in the rolling hills near Orangeville and Mono and offers year-round recreational opportunities. It is a different destination from the cliff landscape of Mono Cliffs. If you’re planning short stays with several nature destinations, you can consider your hotel’s location as a compromise between the lake, park and town visits. The seasons may affect your plans; the general availability of year-round recreation is not a guarantee that every individual activity is available every day.

Along the former railway corridor

The Dufferin Rail Trail follows a former railway corridor. The county section is 38.1 kilometres long and runs from Orangeville through Amaranth, Shelburne and Melancthon to Dundalk. This gives you several possible access points for cycling and hiking days, rather than just one endpoint. Dogs are allowed on the Rail Trail if they are leashed or under control. This rule applies to the trail and does not automatically apply to a hotel room. If you’re planning a stay with a dog, check the specific accommodation’s policy separately in the actual offer.

For hotel locations, Orangeville and Shelburne are therefore useful place references along the route. The town pages help you identify offers and addresses more precisely. However, mentioning these towns does not mean that a hotel is directly on the trail or that a particular hotel is available. Plan your day’s route only after choosing an access point and checking the actual route back to your accommodation.

Other places and reasons to visit

The Bruce Trail has an access point from Dufferin County Road 19. The Dufferin Town & Country Farm Tour takes place annually in the fall and offers a seasonal reason to visit that differs from the year-round trails. If you’re coming specifically for the Farm Tour, you’ll need the current event date; a hotel offer does not include admission. Mansfield is also a town in the county. Without a confirmed route, it should not be described as a general nearby access point to the lake, forest or Rail Trail.

When comparing hotels in Dufferin County, first consider your reason for visiting and the specific town, then check the address, rooms and booking conditions in the actual offer. The old general claims about luxury, spa, ski or beach hotels do not describe established features of the region. The available facts make nature and trail outings a well-founded basis for choosing a location.
