Essex County: Nature, Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Essex County
Point Pelee National Park is one of Canada’s most biodiverse protected areas and has a 20-kilometre-long sandy beach. This means nature watching, outdoor activities and an extensive stretch of coastline all come together in Essex County. Trails, museums and wine-related experiences also give visitors different ways to shape their stay.
Point Pelee and Hillman Marsh
At Point Pelee National Park, birdwatching, hiking, canoeing and kayaking, cycling, swimming and camping are possible year-round. The range of activities spans everything from observing nature to getting active on the water or on land. The sandy beach adds another dimension to the park and makes Point Pelee appealing to travelers who want to combine the coast with a nature experience.
Hillman Marsh offers a different perspective on nature. Its shorebird habitat is unique in North America. The area has five kilometres of walking trails, a nature centre, washrooms and observation towers accessible from the main entrance. Nature information and opportunities for walking and wildlife observation come together here.
Greenways and cycling
The Chrysler Canada Greenway is a 50-kilometre route from Tecumseh to Kingsville and forms the southernmost section of the Trans Canada Trail. It is also part of a network of more than 80 kilometres of connected, safe off-road greenway routes. The trail is designed for hiking, cycling and nature observation. The two distances provide different points of reference: 50 kilometres refers to the route from Tecumseh to Kingsville, while more than 80 kilometres refers to the connected network it belongs to.
Hillman Marsh also has a specific trail distance, though on a different scale: its walking trails are five kilometres long.
Technology history and heritage
The collection at the Essex County Steam and Gas Engine Museum in McGregor includes small engines, tractors, steam engines from around the turn of the century, and an antique sawmill. The Heritage Village at the Canadian Transportation Museum & Heritage Village offers a different focus: it includes more than 20 restored buildings dating from the 18th to the 20th century. Together, the two places offer different ways to explore collection items and historic buildings.
The Canadian Transportation Museum & Heritage Village hosts public fundraising shows and events throughout the year. Individual dates may vary; check the event schedule if you are planning your visit around one of them.
Beach and wine
Facilities at Colchester Beach include a pirate ship playground, a splash pad, a concession stand, new washrooms and a beach volleyball net. This beach adds specific amenities right on the waterfront to the area’s nature and trail offerings.
In Kingsville, the Pelee Island Winery location offers vineyard tours and tastings that include explanations of the winemaking process. Dates may change; check the current schedule if you are planning a tour or tasting. This makes a wine-related visit easy to include as a separate activity.
A trail network in development
The County Wide Active Transportation System (CWATS) is being expanded. Once complete, the network is intended to allow tourists to use trails in Essex County to visit historic sites and regional wineries. Routes and the completion status may change. For trip planning, it is therefore important to consider CWATS a planned offering and check its status before visiting.
