Norfolk County: Hotels between Lake Erie and history
Accommodation in Norfolk County
When looking for a hotel in Norfolk County, it helps to first choose the focus of your trip: the beaches on Lake Erie, trails through the countryside or the region’s history. The sights and activities offer different perspectives on the county. You can shape your stay around whether you’re especially interested in coastal scenery, cycling and walking trails, or historic places.
Lake Erie, Long Point and migratory birds
Norfolk County has many kilometres of sandy beaches along the shore of Lake Erie. Long Point is a 40-kilometre-long sand spit on the lake’s north shore, both a sandy beach and part of Long Point Provincial Park. Long Point National Wildlife Area is also located on Long Point, the sandy peninsula near Port Rowan. It is an important area for waterfowl and migratory birds—a natural attraction in its own right, alongside the beach and protected landscape.
For day visits, the beaches in the Thoroughfare Unit and Long Point Unit of Long Point National Wildlife Area are open from mid-April to mid-September. Availability depends on high-water conditions, so check the latest visitor notice before your trip. This seasonal window is important when planning a beach visit, while Long Point’s length and the different protected-area designations offer a broader impression of the coastal landscape.
Trails for different ways to explore
The county’s recreational trail network is intended for pedestrians, cyclists, skateboarders, scooter users and people using mobility aids. These user groups apply to the network as a whole. Individual trails differ in route and surface, so it’s worth choosing a specific route when planning your trip.
The Lynn Valley Rail Trail runs from Simcoe to Port Dover. The Lynn Valley Trail is a ten-kilometre former railway line converted into a walking trail. The Waterford Heritage Trail runs from Simcoe to Waterford and continues north to the County of Brant. When choosing a route, you can consider both the places along the way and the type of trail.
In the Backus Heritage Conservation Area, trails wind through Backus Woods. At the Waterford Heritage Trail, the Black Bridge has a fully planked surface, protective railings and three viewing points. Those interested in the county’s history and nature can also find a connection to Norfolk County’s natural and Indigenous history on the Attawandaron Cycling Route.
Historic places and local stories
Backhouse Mill was built in 1798 to grind grain into flour for the local community. In 1998, it was designated a National Historic Site of Canada. At Backhouse Historic Site, tours, hands-on activities, demonstrations of historic practices and special events bring history to life. Note the mill’s separate visitor restriction: Backhouse Grist Mill is closed to tours during the 2026 season due to structural safety concerns. Check the latest visitor information before visiting.
Port Dover Harbour Museum is dedicated to Port Dover’s commercial fishing heritage. The permanent exhibit “Feeding the Gangs: Culinary Arts on the Farm” offers a different perspective on local working history. It tells the story of the planning, skill and effort required to feed 20 young men during the tobacco harvest. Norfolk War Memorial, Carillon Tower adds another striking feature: the county landmark tower is 60 feet tall and has 23 bells.
A stay with different focuses
You can choose how much emphasis to give each theme based on your interests: Long Point represents sandy coastline and natural areas, the trails offer different routes through the county, and museums and historic sites explore topics such as fishing, farming and the history of Backhouse Mill. Cider Keg Farm Market adds to this selection with seasonal fruit and vegetables, locally made cider, meat products and baked goods for purchase. When planning your stay, you can consider local products alongside scenery and history, without combining every stop into a fixed loop.
