Wetlands, forest landscapes, hiking trails and historic routes give Nipissing District a diverse natural and cultural character. The parks offer different experiences, from interconnected loop trails and forest communities to seasonal whitewater canoeing. The district also features the history of the Ghost Road and a replica lumber camp.

Wetlands, Forest and Hiking Trails

At Mashkinonje Provincial Park, swamps, bogs, swamp forests, nutrient-poor bogs and ponds form a diverse wetland mosaic. Its wetlands include the Loudon Basin Peatlands and Muskrat Creek complexes, which are classified as provincially significant. The trail network is also extensive: ten hiking trails run in interconnected loops, covering a total of 30 km. Trail conditions may vary; check current advisories before your trip.

Algonquin Provincial Park offers a different perspective on the district’s landscape. Its interior encompasses 7,635 km² of forests, bogs, lakes and rivers; most of the park lies in Nipissing District. There are 14 interpretive trails in the park. Their availability may vary by season or according to current advisories. If these trails are part of your plans, take seasonal information into account when planning your visit.

At Marten River Provincial Park, three connected hiking trails can be distinguished by length: the Transition Trail is 4.2 km, the Old Growth Trail is 3.5 km, and the Pine Marten Trail is 0.8 km. This offers trails of notably different lengths.

Forest diversity and paddling are defining features of Opeongo River Provincial Park. It is home to at least 34 different forest communities, including eastern white pine, sugar maple, poplar and paper birch. Whitewater canoeing is possible in spring, depending on seasonal water levels. This timing is an important distinction from hiking opportunities, whose availability in Algonquin Park may vary by season and current advisories.

Cycling and Historic Routes

The Voyageur 200 cycling tour follows remote secondary roads in Nipissing District, known for dense, lush pine forests and wetlands. The route may change from one edition to the next. If you plan to take this tour, be sure to check the information for the relevant edition.

The historic Ghost Road is considered the first settlement road in Nipissing District. Sections of the road are part of the Trans Canada Trail and are used by hikers, cyclists and other outdoor enthusiasts. The Ghost Road thus brings together two different travel interests: its historical significance and the use of parts of the route within the trail network.

Discover the History of Lumbering

Another cultural stop is Winter Camp at Marten River Provincial Park. It is a replica lumber camp featuring historic logging equipment, a museum and a theatre. This sets it apart from the parks’ wetlands and forest landscapes: here, the focus is on interpreting a historic lumber camp.

Seasonal canoeing is also available at Opeongo River Provincial Park. Consider which of these themes you want to shape your trip, and take the relevant trail and water conditions into account when making specific plans.
