Sturgeon Falls offers several different themes to consider when planning your trip: historical exhibits at the museum, art and sporting heritage, as well as scenery and recreational activities. You can choose based on your interests, whether you’d rather explore regional history, specific works of art, or an outdoor activity.

History at the Sturgeon River House Museum

The Sturgeon River House Museum presents the fur trade era from 1623 to 1879; pioneer life in West Nipissing covers the period from 1878 to 1939. The periods overlap in 1878 and 1879, rather than following one another at a clear year boundary. You’ll encounter two distinct themes whose time periods partly overlap.

The museum includes LaForge Charles, a working blacksmith shop, and Maison Major, a pioneer-style home. The Duquette Icehouse is also located at the Sturgeon River House Museum. The shop and home add specific links to craftsmanship and pioneer style to the historical themes.

The museum offers educational programs and guided tours for schools, tourist groups, and other organizations; arrangements may vary. Beside the Sturgeon River, the museum also has a courtyard for family picnics.

Art and sporting heritage

Public art adds another dimension. Coco the Bear is a white pine sculpture in downtown Sturgeon Falls at 227 King Street. Stella the Sturgeon is located at 204 King Street. A historic mural at 159 Main Street depicts landmarks in Sturgeon Falls.

The West Nipissing Sports Hall of Fame recognizes athletes whose achievements brought recognition to their community, as well as people whose contributions benefited sport in West Nipissing. Alongside art and local history, sporting achievements and community involvement are also part of the town’s cultural landscape.

Scenery and recreational activities

The West Nipissing Barn Quilt Trail offers a chance to discover the local scenery on a leisurely drive. Individual displays may change. The West Nipissing Snowmobile Club grooms and maintains more than 330 kilometres of snowmobile trails; conditions vary by season.

The difference matters when choosing an activity: the Barn Quilt Trail centres on a leisurely drive through the scenery, while trail maintenance and seasonally varying conditions are relevant to the snowmobile network. You can plan according to your preferred mode of travel and the seasonal conditions.

The Theodore Fouriezos Wetlands Park is part of the Cache Bay Wetland Conservation Reserve. Sturgeon Falls’ public beach on Main Street has tennis and volleyball courts.

Getting your bearings on the Sturgeon River

The Champlain Bridge Lookout is on the south side of Front Street (Highway 17), at the bridge over the Sturgeon River. From there, you can see the river and the West Nipissing Hydro Generating Plant.

From the Sturgeon River House Museum, you can head out onto the Sturgeon River; access and fees may vary. If you’re planning to do this, check the conditions in advance.
