The wider West Nipissing area offers a variety of ways to explore the region, including history, public art, winter trails, and activities on the Sturgeon River and Lake Nipissing. If you’re looking for hotels in West Nipissing, these interests may help you decide which outings to include in your travel plans.

Culture and History

The Sturgeon River House Museum promotes and preserves the cultural and natural heritage of the Municipality of West Nipissing. Its exhibition covers the fur trade era from 1623 to 1879. Alongside the broader heritage theme, it focuses on a clearly defined historical period.

The museum offers educational programs and guided tours for school classes, tourist groups, and other organizations. If you’re planning a group tour, check the booking arrangements in advance, as they may change.

The Historical Mural of Sturgeon Falls depicts numerous local landmarks, including the former St-Jean-de-Brébeuf Hospital, Abitibi Mill, and Windsor Hotel. These subjects give the mural a specific connection to the town’s history.

The Downtown Art Walk in Sturgeon Falls is a 1 km, moderately challenging route. It is wheelchair-accessible and suitable for people with reduced mobility. Check current route conditions before setting out.

River, Lake and Boat Slips

You can launch a boat on the Sturgeon River from the Sturgeon River House Museum. Another route leads from the museum through the park, where you can enjoy the changing scenery and views of Lake Nipissing along the way. The museum therefore provides both access to the river and a route with lake views.

The Champlain Bridge Lookout is on the south side of Front Street (Highway 17), at the bridge over the Sturgeon River. From there, you can see the river and the West Nipissing Hydro Generating Plant.

Trails and Seasonal Activities

Every year after January 1, the Ski Club at the Sturgeon Falls Rod and Gun Club grooms and tracks 13 km of cross-country ski trails and packs 12 km of snowshoe trails. The offerings differ both by activity and trail preparation. Check seasonal conditions and trail status before setting out.

The West Nipissing ATV Club promotes safe and responsible ATV riding, as well as the development and signing of shared-use trails within the Municipality of West Nipissing and surrounding areas. This is another activity focus in the wider region.
