Lambton County: Coast, Nature and History
Accommodation in Lambton County
Nine kilometres of beach at Pinery Provincial Park give Lambton County a distinct coastal character. The county stretches along the St. Clair River and the shore of Lake Huron. At the same time, trails wind through forest, oak savanna, and dunes, while museums share local history. You can therefore choose different themes for your stay: coastal scenery, nature trails, or cultural attractions.
Coast and Landscape
Pinery Provincial Park has a nine-kilometre-long beach. It is classified as a Natural Environment Park because it contains provincially significant landforms and associated natural, cultural, and recreational resources. This classification adds a broader perspective on the landscape and its range of resources to the information about the beach.
Trails Through Forest, Savanna, and Dunes
At Lambton Heritage Museum, the Woodland Heritage Trail is an approximately one-kilometre loop through the forest surrounding the main museum and historic buildings. In the Ausable River Cut Conservation Area, a one-kilometre recreational trail winds through oak savanna and dunes. The distances are similar, but the routes and their surroundings differ: a loop at the museum and a trail through savanna and dunes. Weather permitting, the multi-use trails in the Ausable River Cut can be used for walking, snowshoeing, or cross-country skiing. There is also a StoryWalk; StoryWalks are updated every spring and fall.
Rock Glen Conservation Area offers walking trails through a Carolinian forest, with views of Rock Glen Falls. Lambton County Heritage Forest has a network of three interconnected trails totalling eight kilometres. The forest belongs to Lambton County; the trails pass through oak savanna and Carolinian forest. The Ipperwash Dunes & Swales Nature Trail offers a different combination of landforms: it winds through Carolinian forest with sand ridges and wet depressions that can be crossed via boardwalks. Be aware that mosquitoes are present seasonally. Forested Dunes Nature Reserve is part of the Port Franks Dunes & Wetlands Complex. The complex is designated an Area of Natural and Scientific Interest and an Important Birding Area; the trail itself is not maintained.
Museums and County History
The Oil Museum of Canada, a National Historic Site, highlights the significance of Lambton County’s contributions to the development of the global petroleum industry. It connects local history with the broader history of the petroleum industry. Lambton Heritage Museum showcases the county’s artefacts, culture, and local history. Five historic buildings are located on site: Rokeby School, Cameron Church, Tudhop Home, Beef-ring Slaughterhouse, and Ravenswood Blacksmith Shop. The site also includes two exhibition halls. The Lambton Gallery offers a themed exploration of the county’s history.
The Arkona Lions Museum and Information Centre houses an extensive collection of Devonian fossils, minerals, and artefacts from the surrounding area. Along with the museums in Lambton County, it offers another way to explore the region’s history and discoveries.
