Four masterpieces of medieval architecture define Piazza del Duomo in Pisa: the cathedral, the baptistery, the bell tower and the Campo Santo cemetery. Anyone interested in Pisa’s history will find a tangible starting point here; museums, botanical collections and natural areas offer further themes to explore.

Piazza del Duomo and Medieval Heritage

Piazza del Duomo was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in December 1987. Its four buildings represent different forms of medieval architecture and together define the square. At Campo Santo, fresco cycles preserve depictions of the Triumph of Death, the Last Judgment and stories of the holy hermits. Alongside its architectural role, the cemetery’s imagery gives it a distinct art-historical dimension.

The medieval walls are another testament to the city’s history. Originally, they were about seven kilometres long; their towers stood 300 metres apart, and the complex had around 20 gates. These measurements describe the historic fortifications. The Museo Nazionale di San Matteo offers a view of artworks spanning the Middle Ages to the 16th century. Its collection includes illuminated manuscripts from the 13th and 14th centuries, as well as a collection of stone sculptures.

Gardens, Art and Maritime History

The Orto Botanico di Pisa is organised mainly according to a historic division into seven sections. Each section contains one or more scientifically organised plant collections. Around 3,000 plants are cultivated across approximately two hectares. These approximate figures convey the scale of the garden, while its layout makes the collections a central focus of a visit. Guided tours are available for private visitors. Before travelling, check whether a tour is available on your chosen date.

The collection at the Museo delle Navi Antiche di Pisa tells a story of trade, sailors, shipping routes, life on board and shipwrecks. The museum is also associated with an excavation completed in 2016, during which about 30 ships from Roman times were recovered. Palazzo Blu offers a different cultural focus: it houses a centre for cultural activities and exhibitions established by Fondazione Pisa.

Natural Areas and Outdoor Activities

The Parco di Migliarino, San Rossore, Massaciuccoli is a protected natural area with beaches, Mediterranean scrub, wetlands and forests of maritime pines, holm oaks and poplars. The Tenuta di San Rossore can be explored on foot, by bicycle and on horseback. The WWF Dune di Tirrenia oasis stretches along the coast over 24 hectares; as of August 2026, it was listed as open year-round. The nature-related attractions range from different types of landscape to different ways of exploring the Tenuta.

Events and Getting Around

During the Gioco del Ponte, twelve teams push a heavy cart on rails, positioned in the middle of the Ponte di Mezzo on the Lungarni. The event takes place every year on the last Saturday in June; the 2026 edition was held on 27 June. If you would like to plan your trip around this date, check the event details in advance. As of August 2026, a farmers’ market featuring organic produce was listed as taking place in Piazza Cairoli on the fourth Saturday of every month.

For getting around Pisa, the tourist wayfinding system includes interactive maps, QR codes and four themed itineraries. Its completion was reported on 31 July 2026; the system may be updated. The PisaMover connects Pisa Centrale and Pisa-San Giusto Galileo Galilei Airport in less than three minutes. As services and timetables may change, check the details before travelling.

If you are looking for a hotel for your stay in Pisa, you can start by deciding what you want to focus on during your trip: medieval architecture and museums, botanical collections, nature or an event date.
