Monteverdi Marittimo: History, Nature and Trails
Accommodation in Monteverdi Marittimo
Monteverdi Marittimo is a small village in the Val di Cecina, on the southern slope of the Colline Metallifere. Historic buildings, a network of paths in the oldest part of the village, and nature and cycling themes offer different ways to explore the destination. When planning, you can prioritize whichever of these interests will shape your stay.
History, Churches and Village Paths
The history of Monteverdi Marittimo begins in 754 with the founding of the Badia di San Pietro a Palazzuolo by Benedictine monks led by San Walfredo. The church of Sant’Andrea is located in the historic center. Built in the 14th century, it has a natural stone façade and a polychrome lunette from the della Robbia school.
The Chapel of the Santissimo Sacramento was built beside Sant’Andrea in 1751. It houses the Cristo Nero, a wooden crucifix dating from the 14th or 15th century. The chapel’s construction date and the crucifix’s dating therefore refer to two different periods.
The so-called rughe lead to the oldest part of the village: a dense network of footpaths that intersect the ring-shaped streets. The name thus refers not to a single street, but to a pattern of paths formed by several connections. If you want to understand the oldest part of the village, the rughe are a concrete example of how footpaths and ring-shaped streets meet within the village layout.
Nature, Garden and Picnic
The Monterufoli-Caselli Nature Reserve is located in the Monteverdi Marittimo area. Another garden attraction is the Giardino Emozionale dei Sentieri di Piume: this sensory garden covers about 8,000 square meters and was created in 2021 on a rural estate dating from the 16th century. The reserve and the landscaped garden thus represent different nature-related themes in the destination.
The picnic area in Monteverdi Marittimo is equipped with barbecue grills, a public water supply and wooden tables. If you’re planning an outdoor break, you’ll find these specific picnic facilities here.
Cycling Routes and the Annual Calendar
The “Foreste e cascate nella riserva di Monterufoli Caselli” circular route runs through the Monteverdi Marittimo area. It is short and relatively easy, and suitable for gravel bikes or mountain bikes. An e-MTB charging station is located in Piazza S. Rocco in Monteverdi and has space for six bicycles. If you plan to use the station on your ride, check that it is currently working before use.
The Strada del Vino delle Colline Pisane also passes through Monteverdi Marittimo. The Festa dei Maggerini takes place every year on May 1 and has its roots in pagan protection and supplication rituals for a good harvest. The route and the festival offer different points of interest: the route passes through the village, while the festival is part of the annual calendar.
This makes it possible to choose a destination based on specific travel interests.
