Villa Baciocchi offers an introduction to the history of Capannoli. The building dates back to the 18th century and was most likely built on the remains of a medieval castle. The Marquis Baciocchi inherited the villa in 1833 and made substantial changes to the building and its monumental park. Its construction period, possible medieval predecessor and later alterations make the villa a place where several historical layers can be distinguished.

Museums with different perspectives

The Archaeological Museum is on the first floor of Villa Comunale Baciocchi. Its five rooms trace the development of human history in Valdera from prehistory to the Middle Ages. Multimedia elements, videos and interactive objects complement the exhibition. Reconstructions include the hut from the Neolithic village of Podere Casanuova in Pontedera and Hut B from the village of Montacchita in Palaia. The exhibits therefore relate to specific settlements in the region.

The Zoological Museum focuses on a different subject: its five rooms display more than 400 taxidermied animals from around the world, including mammals, birds, reptiles, fish and invertebrates. Some rooms contain dioramas recreating habitats featuring tigers, bears and lions. In this way, the historical development of human life in Valdera and the diversity of animal life around the world are presented as distinct topics.

An elevator provides access to the first floor for people with mobility impairments. Villa Baciocchi also has restored underground areas. They were probably built and used as cellars. This cautious interpretation is part of their history: their former function is not certain, but use as cellars is considered likely.

Art, theatre and events

The Abbey Church of San Bartolomeo also preserves artworks from several centuries. They include a 17th-century wooden crucifix, a painting of the Eucharist dating from the 17th to 18th centuries, and a painting of the martyrdom of Saint Bartholomew. The latter dates from the 17th century and is a work by Giovan Stefano Marucelli.

At the Teatro Comunale, the cultural programme combines courses with a theatre season: La Scuola delle Arti offers singing, theatre and music courses for all age groups. The Teatro Comunale also organises a season of theatre for adults and children. The programme thus includes both opportunities to take part in performing arts and music and performances for different age groups.
