Discover Peccioli: Museums, Art and Culture
Accommodation in Peccioli
Peccioli offers a multifaceted cultural scene: archaeological finds, sacred art, printmaking and contemporary installations sit alongside events, a planetarium and a named cycling route. You can choose the focus of your stay, whether that means collections and buildings, a festival, or activities related to astronomy and cycling.
Museums and Archaeological Sites
At the Museo di Palazzo Pretorio, the “Incisioni e Litografie – Donazione Vito Merlini” collection comprises 279 works on paper, including prints, lithographs, woodcuts and screen prints. The museum also houses three collections of icons. The varied holdings range from graphic works to icons.
The Museo Archeologico di Peccioli displays finds from the Etruscan sanctuary of Ortaglia and the archaeological site of Santa Mustiola. Nearby, a few kilometres east of Peccioli, the Ortaglia site preserves the remains of a sanctuary complex dating from the 6th to the 3rd century BC. The museum and the site offer different ways to explore this archaeological context: the finds on display here, and the surviving remains of the complex there.
Sacred Art and Historic Buildings
The Romanesque Pieve di San Verano dates from the 11th century and houses works by the Pisan school. The Museo d’Arte Sacra is located in the Cappella dell’Assunta within the Pieve. Its works include a panel painting from the 13th century attributed to Michele di Baldovino. The church building, the works housed in the Pieve and the museum collection each offer a distinct aspect of the site.
The Torre Campanaria di Peccioli is 42 metres high. The Palazzo Senza Tempo also brings together different visitor experiences: it hosts temporary and permanent exhibitions and features a large panoramic terrace overlooking the valley.
Outdoor Art and Exhibitions
The MACCA – Museo D’Arte Contemporanea a Cielo Aperto is an open-air museum spread across Peccioli and its hamlets. Its collection includes more than 70 works, mostly large-scale installations. The MACCA therefore differs in both scale and distribution from the collections in the museums mentioned above. The Palazzo Senza Tempo offers another exhibition focus, with its temporary and permanent exhibitions; its panoramic terrace adds views over the valley.
Events and Activities
The Anfiteatro Fonte Mazzola hosts concerts, performances and summer festivals. It is a few minutes’ walk from Peccioli’s main square, with a car park right next to it. The 11 Lune theatre festival takes place at the amphitheatre every July. The Coppa Sabatini is a cycling race held in October. If you would like to plan your trip around an event, check the specific dates before arranging your stay.
The Centro Astronomico di Libbiano includes a planetarium that helps visitors understand constellations and seasonal changes. For cycling enthusiasts, the 5.3-kilometre “Costellazione” cycling route is a named route in Peccioli. At 5.3 kilometres, it gives you a specific point of reference for planning your trip.
The local character also includes a culinary speciality: Bastoncelli are anise-flavoured wafers typical of the Peccioli area. The range of experiences thus extends from collections and art to events and cycling, as well as a regional pastry.
