Montescudaio brings together works of art in its churches, medieval architectural history and archaeological traces, as well as themes such as wine and Tuscan bread. There is also a protected area, nature trails and a cycling route. When planning your stay, these varied themes can help you organize your interests.

Church Art and Religious Architecture

A new church dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta was built from 1854 to 1857. The Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta houses a painted marble sculpture of Saint Francis of Paola from the 18th century and an Annunciation painting attributed to the 17th-century Venetian school. The works bring together different forms and periods: the sculpture in painted marble and the painting with its art-historical attribution.

The Oratorio della Santissima Annunziata was founded in the 15th century and extensively remodeled in the 1930s. Inside, two glazed terracotta figures are kept: they depict the Announced Virgin and the announcing angel. Access is via Via della Madonna next to the town hall; there are two small steps to climb. The building’s history and artworks offer different clues for understanding the oratory’s past.

Towers, Monastery and Archaeological Traces

The Torre Civica is a 12th-century tower next to Montescudaio’s former town hall. A museum inside displays finds from archaeological excavations at the Badia di Santa Maria. The Badia was a Benedictine convent. Gherardo V della Gherardesca founded it on October 3, 1091. Its remains include walls, a cloister and burials.

Another landmark in the town’s history is the Guardiola, Montescudaio’s only surviving watchtower complex. From there, the view stretches from the Cecina plain to the Tyrrhenian Sea. The town’s walls also tell the story of its architecture: they are up to 15 meters high, and the original wall structure remains intact in both the northern and southern sections. The birthplace of sculptor Italo Griselli is also located in Piazza Matteotti.

The Badia, the 12th-century tower and the 19th-century church represent different historical periods. Those particularly interested in the region’s history and archaeology may find a related topic at CeDiAS: it covers the history and archaeology of the Bassa Val di Cecina, especially Montescudaio, from prehistory to the 20th century. Its events include exhibitions, screenings, educational workshops and professional development sessions.

Wine and Tuscan Bread

Local products also give Montescudaio a distinctive focus. Montescudaio DOC includes red and white wines. White wine can also be made as a dry, medium-dry or sweet Vin Santo. These varieties offer a specific point of reference if you are interested in the different types of wine.

Montescudaio is associated with Tuscan bread baked in a wood-fired oven and is known as a CittĂ  del Pane (City of Bread). Wine and bread represent two different sides of local food culture: a wine tradition named by the DOC and a bread tradition linked to baking in a wood-fired oven.

Green Spaces and Excursion Ideas

The Giardino Scornabecchi complex lies entirely within the Giardino–Belora–Fiume Cecina protected area. Parco urbano del Boschetto has an equipped area with children’s play facilities and nature trails. The cycling route along Strada del Vino offers a different focus and is one of the excursion themes associated with Montescudaio.

These nature and activity options each have a different focus: the protected area, the space equipped with play facilities and nature trails, and the cycling route each offer something distinct. Together with the churches, towers and archaeological traces, they provide a range of interests to help you plan your trip and search for a hotel in Montescudaio.
