If you are looking for hotels for a trip to Orentano, these themes can help you tailor your stay to your interests and preferred time of year.

Festivals and Local Traditions

The Carnevale dei Bambini di Orentano is a popular tradition kept alive through the cooperation of local residents. It shows how community involvement is part of local customs. The Sagra del Bigné takes place in August to mark the patron saint’s feast day of San Lorenzo. August is therefore a specific point of reference when planning your trip if you would like to focus on local festival traditions.

The “Dolcione” was created in 1987. Pastry chefs from Orentano make sculptures from sugar, butter, eggs and flour, described as Guinness record sculptures. San Lorenzino is celebrated on 11 August, the day after San Lorenzo; it includes a shared picnic in the woods at Fonte del Sasso. The custom, which dates back more than a century, was revived in the 1980s and is now kept alive through the “San Lorenzino” festival. Check the current arrangements before your visit.

Circular Trail, Woods and Traces of Village Life

The Grande Anello di Orentano is a circular trail just under 20 kilometres long, marked with CAI-style arrows. Compare the distance with the time you have set aside for your walk. Fonte del Sasso is a spring in the Cerbaie woods towards Seradigo, designated a natural biotope in 1997. It is also the venue for the shared picnic on San Lorenzino, so its name connects a natural feature with a local custom. Le corti di Orentano offers a glimpse, during a walk, of what the village used to look like. The rural courtyards themselves are private spaces.

The Chiesa di San Lorenzo Martire

The Chiesa di San Lorenzo Martire has medieval origins. The present-day building was rebuilt between 1569 and 1580, dedicated to Saint Lawrence at the time, and expanded in 1838. The dates mark two separate building phases: the 16th-century rebuilding and the expansion in 1838. The white bell tower beside the façade was built by villagers working by hand over thirty years, using white stone blocks brought through the marshland. The church and tower thus point to two aspects of the building’s history: dated changes to the structure and the lengthy, communal craft effort involved in building the bell tower.

Archaeological History of Lago di Bientina

The Museo archeologico di Orentano illustrates the history and characteristics of settlement in the former lake basin of Lago di Bientina through original materials, graphic displays and scale reconstructions, from the Palaeolithic to the Middle Ages. Finds associated with settlement include objects made of wood and stone, ceramics, metal objects and coins, as well as the remains of a Roman bridge and a medieval canoe. The canoe was used for travel on Lago di Bientina. This long time span places the archaeological themes in a broad historical context.
