Terricciola – Wine, Trails and History
Accommodation in Terricciola
Terricciola offers several distinct themes for a trip: underground remains shaped by Etruscan culture, churches and an abbey, wine production, and trails through varied landscapes. You can choose the municipality based on whether you are more interested in architecture and history, sandstone and clay formations, vineyards, or nature watching. These highlights give you practical guidance for planning your trip and searching for a hotel in Terricciola.
Etruscan traces and historic buildings
The Ipogeo del Belvedere is about 15.5 metres long and has six niches. The Ipogeo del Cassero has different architectural features: its layout is linear, with side niches and a pointed arch carved into sandy rock. Terricciola’s Etruscan history is also evident in its tufa hypogea. These underground remains are a distinct highlight alongside the municipality’s churches and abbey.
The Chiesa di San Donato stands at the highest point of Terricciola. Its interior is designed in the neoclassical style of the mid-19th century. The church also houses a Madonna and Child with Saints attributed to Anton Domenico Bamberini. The building offers the chance to appreciate both its interior design and a specific work of art.
The Badia di Morrona is an old abbey associated with medieval monasticism and founded by the Cadolingi. The Santuario della Madonna di Monterosso, in turn, is an old watchtower fortress with a 19th-century portico. Both sites complement the church art and underground structures with different historical associations: the abbey with its ties to medieval monasticism, and the Santuario with its former role as a watchtower fortress.
Trails and landscapes
The trails described differ in their landscape features. Along Sentiero 461, cypress-lined sections alternate with views of vineyards, olive groves and clay landscapes. Sentiero 455 explores the clay landscape in the southwestern part of the municipality. Comparing the trail descriptions by terrain and landscape reveals two distinct focuses: cypresses, cultivated land and scenic views on the one hand, and the clay landscape on the other.
Sentiero 453 has the additional name Lago di Cuccheri, after the small artificial lake in Cuccheri. Its route passes through sandy soils and Pleistocene sandstone. Vineyards and olive groves shape Sentiero 451, which runs mostly over sandy terrain. The area around this trail also has small Etruscan rock-cut necropolises, mostly dating from the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC. The historical connection is therefore associated with this stretch, while the description of Sentiero 453 focuses mainly on the lake and geological terrain.
The other trail descriptions also have their own highlights: Sentiero 454 passes through a vineyard into the Valle Botro di Rosciano and then follows the Botro through meadows and woodland. A section of Sentiero 464 runs alongside the Torrente Sterza for about 1.5 kilometres. The lake area near La Sterza is home to waterbirds such as coots, grey herons, mallards and swans. For planning purposes, you can consider woodland and meadow sections, a trail along the stream, and the birdlife of the lake area separately.
Wine and local character
Hills covered with grapevines have made Terricciola a wine-growing area. Wine consumption also has a long history: grave goods from ancient tombs in the area attest to it as far back as the Hellenistic period. The landscape and historical evidence point to different aspects of wine: the area’s present-day character as a wine region and wine consumption in antiquity.
The Fattoria Fibbiano wine tour includes a tasting of five wines served with Tuscan cured meats and cheeses. If you would like to include this tour in your travel plans, check its availability before your trip.
