Pomarance can be explored through a range of themes: the use of geothermal energy, a medieval fortress and historic buildings from several centuries. The Museo della Geotermia di Larderello is located within the municipality of Pomarance and focuses on the history and technology of geothermal energy. Rocca Sillana and the historic buildings offer other points of interest. To plan your visit, you can first consider whether technical history, architecture or local culture will shape your stay.

Geothermal Energy and the Fortress

Rocca Sillana is a medieval fortress on a hilltop viewpoint about 530 metres high in the Pomarance area. Unlike the Geothermal Museum, the focus here is on medieval fortifications. Today, Rocca Sillana can be visited on guided tours. The tours cover its history, construction techniques and everyday life within the fortifications. Check seasonal arrangements before your trip if you plan to join a tour. E-bikes can be rented at the Pomarance tourist office. You can include e-bike rental as a separate item in your transport planning. These are two distinct ways to explore history: the museum focuses on a technology and its development, while the fortress offers insight into a medieval structure and life within its walls.

Architecture Across the Centuries

The Church of San Giovanni Battista preserves works by the painter and architect Cristoforo Roncalli, known as Il Pomarancio, from the 16th and 17th centuries. Pomarance Town Hall reveals a different layering of time: the building dates from the 14th century, while many coats of arms on its façade date from the 15th and 16th centuries. The building and the coats of arms therefore belong to different periods. Museo Casa Bicocchi preserves a fully intact 19th-century bourgeois interior with rich furnishings, decorated ceilings and valuable household objects. What matters here is not just a single object, but the preserved interior as a whole. The grand palace of the de Larderel family is associated with the initial use of the area’s natural steam. Casa Mugnaini-Ricci dates from the 12th century. The buildings and collections thus offer a range of historical perspectives: from a medieval house to the town hall and church art, 19th-century bourgeois life and the history of steam use.

Local Life and a Local Product

Local culture is also reflected in a distinctive tradition. The Palio Storico delle Contrade di Pomarance involves the whole town. In the four Contrade, costumes, sets and scripts are prepared throughout the year. This preparation brings together different creative activities and is itself part of the tradition. If the Palio is part of your travel plans, check the event dates before finalising your trip. Agnello Pomarancino is also part of the local identity: it is recognised as a Slow Food Presidium. This recognition adds a local product to the area’s historical and cultural themes.
