San Dalmazio has a historic center of medieval origin, and the “Green Fondo Paolo Bettini La Geotermia – percorso Classic” circuit passes through the town. This brings together two distinct travel interests: the history of the center and a named cycling route. Other historical points of interest include the Chiesa di San Dalmazio, the Pieve di San Giovanni Battista in Sillano, and the remains of ancient mines in the Pavone Valley.

The Town’s Medieval History

The medieval origins refer to the historic center of San Dalmazio. The Chiesa di San Dalmazio is a surviving historical testament to the local history of the Benedictine nuns. The historical classification of the center and the history associated with the Benedictine nuns thus emerge as distinct aspects of the town’s past. The Pieve di San Giovanni Battista in Sillano is another religious point of interest. It is located in the hamlet of Sillano, near San Dalmazio, in the municipality of Pomarance. The location helps distinguish the two religious sites: the Pieve is in Sillano, while the Chiesa is named after San Dalmazio.

The Rocca Sillana in the Val di Cecina

The Rocca Sillana offers another perspective on medieval history. It is one of the most imposing medieval fortresses in the Val di Cecina and stands on a scenic hill in the municipality of Pomarance, at an altitude of about 530 meters. Unlike the historic center of San Dalmazio, the Rocca is a different specific historical subject: here, the focus is on a fortress and its hilltop location. The two places can therefore be distinguished by their individual character, rather than treating medieval history as a single category.

Mining History and the Torrente Pavone

The remains of ancient copper and silver mines can be found in the Pavone Valley. They were contested and exploited from Etruscan times until the end of the 19th century. This long time span makes mining a distinct historical subject alongside the medieval center and the fortress. The two metals are also specifically named: the traces in the valley represent the history of copper and silver mining.

The Torrente Pavone is a tributary of the Cecina and is one of the least polluted waterways in Tuscany. Together with the mining history, the watercourse offers a different perspective on the Pavone area: the mines tell of past use, while the statement about water quality concerns the river itself.

Road Connection and Cycling Circuit

The S.P. 27 passes through San Dalmazio and connects the S.R. 439 with Montecastelli Pisano. This is a specific road connection for the town; the cycling circuit, in turn, runs through the Val di Pavone as well as San Dalmazio and Montecastelli.

The “Green Fondo Paolo Bettini La Geotermia – percorso Classic” circuit is over 90 kilometers long, has 1,350 meters of elevation gain, and is of medium difficulty. These details describe different aspects of the tour: the distance indicates its length, the elevation gain the climbing, and “medium” its difficulty level. If you include the circuit in your travel plans, you can compare these three features separately with your own expectations for a tour.
