San Miniato brings together medieval architecture, archaeological traces and museums exploring topics from the Via Francigena to truffle culture. The Rocca di Federico II, the settlement of San Genesio and various collections offer different ways to explore the area's history. When planning your trip, consider whether you are particularly interested in defensive architecture, archaeological finds, the history of writing or truffles. You can take these interests into account when choosing a hotel for your stay.

The Rocca di Federico II and medieval defence

The Rocca di Federico II was built between 1217 and 1223 at the behest of Frederick II of Swabia. Its tower stood about 37 metres high. This approximate height gives an idea of the scale of the structure; however, its significance extended beyond the tower. The Rocca was part of a complex defensive system occupying the central, highest part of San Miniato. The site can therefore be explored through its architecture and defensive function—two aspects that broaden the focus beyond the structure itself to the medieval organisation of the town.

San Genesio and the Via Francigena

San Miniato is one of the historic stops on the Via Francigena recorded by Sigeric on his return journey to Canterbury. The history of the settlement of San Genesio is also connected with ancient routes: it developed along the ancient Via Quinzia between Pisa and Florence, and later along the route of the Via Francigena. These connections reveal different aspects of the past—San Miniato as a recorded stop on Sigeric's journey, and San Genesio as a settlement along two successive routes.

The archaeological record of San Genesio covers the settlement's history from the 3rd–2nd century BC to the 14th–15th century. The foundations and crypt of the former parish church can be seen at the site. The Antiquarium of the San Genesio archaeological site in the municipality of San Miniato preserves and displays finds from multidisciplinary research and excavation campaigns conducted by the University of Pisa since 2001. Together, the visible structural remains and the exhibits provide insight into different aspects of the settlement's history.

Museums dedicated to writing and truffles

The Museo didattico sulla CiviltĂ  della Scrittura traces the key stages in the history of writing. Using mostly faithful reproductions, it also documents how the various materials used for written works have evolved. The visit thus focuses on two related questions: how writing changed over time, and what materials written works were recorded on. In addition to access to the museum, admission also offers the opportunity to take part in one or more workshops. If you plan to attend a workshop, check the current information before your visit.

The Museo del Tartufo delle Colline Samminiatesi tells the story of the landscape where the world's largest truffles grow. The “Caccia al Tartufo” experience offers a hands-on way to explore the subject: it includes a one-hour truffle hunt in the forest with a truffle hunter, followed by a tasting featuring fresh truffle. If you would like to include this experience in your travel plans, check its current availability and arrangements in advance. This lets you choose between a museum visit that explores the subject through the landscape and the described hunt and tasting.
