In Märkisch-Oderland, culture, history and routes can each be the focus of a trip. When choosing a destination, it helps to first consider whether you would like to focus on a museum, an event or a particular route. The places and attractions below offer specific points of reference.

Experience culture and history

In Buckow, the Brecht-Weigel House has been a museum since 1977. The house has a garden with a balustrade by the lake and a jetty. The Brecht-Weigel House Literature Museum hosts readings, concerts, talks, discussions, films, exhibitions and special guided tours throughout the year. The individual events vary. You can therefore connect your visit to a particular theme by checking the current programme.

Castles and manor houses, well-preserved half-timbered houses in historic town centres and museums are also among Märkisch-Oderland’s cultural features. In Neuhardenberg, Neuhardenberg Castle is now a cultural venue with a hotel, restaurants and event spaces. Its programme includes exhibitions, concerts, theatre performances and readings; the specific events change.

Neulietzegöricke offers another historical perspective: the old colonist village lies in the Oderbruch in Märkisch-Oderland and, as a district of the municipality of Neulewin, has been placed entirely under monument protection. The Oderbruch is part of the wider regional area and is a cultural region connected with Märkisch-Oderland and Barnim. It received the European Heritage Label in 2022; more than 40 designated heritage sites bring its cultural heritage to life.

In Seelow, the Seelower Höhen Memorial and Museum focus on the events of the war, its consequences and the use of the memorial site. The multimedia exhibition is available in German and English. The outdoor grounds are freely accessible regardless of opening hours; this information applies to the grounds, not access to the indoor museum. Check the latest information about the exhibition and access before your visit.

In the mining town of Rüdersdorf bei Berlin, the Miners’ Festival has been celebrated every year on the first weekend of July since the mining tradition was revived. The programme and exact dates vary from year to year. If you would like to plan your trip around the event, check the information for the relevant year.

Compare routes and activities

In the Märkische Schweiz, you can explore the 17 km Natura Trail or the certified Märkische Schweiz Nature Park Route, which is just under 21 km long. The Natura Trail is the shorter of the two routes; the Nature Park Route is longer. You can take this difference in length into account when planning. Also check local trail conditions.

The Oderlandweg passes along shaded forest paths, through sunlit deciduous forests and narrow valleys, and by small bodies of water. Its description thus highlights both wooded stretches and valleys and bodies of water. If you are planning a cycling route instead, you could consider cycling routes along the Oder-Neiße Cycle Route in Märkisch-Oderland.

The Oderbruchbahn Cycle Route passes through the quiet landscape of the Oderbruch and also connects the route with the beginnings of the 20th century and the history of rail travel. Its main route runs from Fürstenwalde/Spree or, alternatively, from Müncheberg to Wriezen. The two suggested starting points offer different options for planning your route; individual connections may change, so check them before setting off.

The Sparkassen Ski Arena in Bad Freienwalde offers a different kind of activity: all the ski jumps can be used in summer and winter. Special mats and weather-independent inrun tracks make year-round ski jumping possible. The facility can therefore be used in both seasons; check access arrangements before visiting.
