Falkenberg: Hiking Trails, Oderbruch Views and Nature
Accommodation in Falkenberg
Falkenberg combines hiking trails with scenic views and historic sites. If you are looking for hotels in Falkenberg, the focus of your trip can help you plan your stay: the routes differ in their layout, while the views, park history and nature reveal other sides of the town.
Landscape and Recreation Areas
Falkenberg/Mark stretches along a steep escarpment at the edge of the Oder lowlands. The elevation difference along the slope is up to 80 metres. Carlsburg offers a striking view over the Oderbruch. The escarpment and the view across the lowlands are among the area's defining landscape features.
Recreation areas in Falkenberg/Mark include the Rote Mühle, the Karpfenteich, Paschenberg, Schmiedeberg and the Cöthen Valley. The hiking trails also offer distinct highlights: there are well-marked paths in the Falkenberg Heights, and several routes can be distinguished by their layout.
Hiking by Route Type
The Oderlandweg runs in three stages from Wriezen via Falkenberg/Mark and Wölsickendorf-Wollenberg and back to Wriezen. On 5 September 2014, the trail received the “Quality Trail Wanderbares Deutschland” award. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
Another hiking route passes the Mon Choix forest inn and continues to the old Ida Oak before returning to Falkenberg. The Fontane Trail runs between Falkenberg and Bad Freienwalde and offers views across the Niederoderbruch towards Poland. The trails therefore differ in their route and landscape features: the route to the Ida Oak returns to Falkenberg, the Oderlandweg leads back to Wriezen in stages, and views across the Niederoderbruch are among the Fontane Trail's noted features. You should also check current local conditions before hiking these trails.
Cöthen: Park History and Stream Valley
Falkenberg/Mark and Cöthen were first mentioned together in historical records in 1334. Centuries later, at the beginning of the 19th century, Cöthen Park was laid out between the Cöthen manor house and Carlsburg. Remnants include an old waterwheel and a waterfall in the source area of the Cöthen stream.
The Cöthen stream valley has a near-natural stand of mature trees and provides a habitat for brown trout, kingfishers and grey wagtails. In the Cöthen Valley, park history sits alongside a near-natural landscape. Its water and woodland features add another perspective on the surroundings to the views and hiking routes.
Märkisch-Oderland: Regional Cycling Routes
Märkisch-Oderland, as a wider travel destination, also offers a regional perspective for cycling tours: rides are possible in the region along the Oder-Neiße Cycle Route. The main route of the Oderbruchbahn Cycle Route runs from Fürstenwalde/Spree or, alternatively, from Müncheberg to Wriezen. It passes through the quiet landscape of the Oderbruch and is also a journey into the early 20th century and the history of rail transport. These cycling routes offer a different focus from the hiking trails in Falkenberg.
Getting There
Regional trains run hourly between Eberswalde and Falkenberg. Check the current timetable before travelling. The timetable and route cover two different aspects of planning: getting there and choosing a hike.
