Strausberg between Straussee and city history
Accommodation in Strausberg
Strausberg lies on the shores of Lake Straussee in an area rich in forests and lakes. Water, hiking and city history offer three distinct themes to consider when planning your trip. There are also special activities, such as an electric cable ferry and a treetop adventure course. If you are looking for a hotel in Strausberg, first consider whether lakeshores and trails, historic sites or individual experiences will shape your stay.
At Lake Straussee: Ferry and lido
The electric passenger cable ferry StrausseeFähre connects the town centre with the Jenseits des Sees recreation area. It draws its power from an overhead line; the crossing takes about eight minutes. The ferry is considered a technical monument because of its unique propulsion system. This route thus combines a practical crossing of the lake with a distinctive technical feature. Check the current timetable before travelling.
The historic lido is another part of Strausberg’s connection with the water. It dates from 1925 and has a 50-metre-long sandy beach. There is a boat rental next to it. Since the operating status of the facility and the rental service may change, it is advisable to check the latest information before visiting.
Hiking routes by distance
The Herrensee hike starts at “Strausberg Stadt” S-Bahn station, passes through the Annatal valley and along Lake Herrensee, and ends at the “Schlagmühle” tram stop. It is about seven kilometres long. The Drei-Seen-Wanderung (Three Lakes Hike) also starts at “Strausberg Stadt” S-Bahn station. It passes Lake Straussee, Lake Fängersee, Lake Bötzsee and Postbruch before ending at “Strausberg” station, and is about 15 kilometres long. The difference in the stated distances helps you plan the length of your hike; the routes also take you to different named locations.
Another option is the Seesichtenweg, which is just under nine kilometres long. It follows the shore of Lake Straussee and offers views of the town skyline. This gives it a different focus from the two hikes, with their named lakes and stops. Trail conditions may change, so check them before setting out.
The Lange Dammwiesen nature reserve begins just north of Strausberg. It was designated a protected area in 1951 and is an important wetland in Brandenburg because of its biodiversity and ecological features. A purpose-built viewpoint on its eastern side offers a wide view across the wetland. With a little luck, you may be able to spot wild boar and roe deer, as well as characteristic wet meadow birds, depending on the season.
City history and museums
Strausberg’s old town is a protected historic district. The town wall is about 1,600 metres long and up to six metres high. Stolpersteine (memorial stones) in Große Straße commemorate the Jewish population. The Alte Brauhof is also on Große Straße, at number 18; it is considered one of the last surviving reminders of Strausberg’s medieval brewing tradition. These places offer different points of connection with the town’s history, from its built heritage to remembrance and brewing traditions.
The Strausberg Town Museum is housed in nine rooms and displays objects from early history through to 1970. The permanent exhibition at Strausberg Airfield Museum offers a different time perspective, covering the history of aviation from 1913 to the present day. The Airfield Museum is open daily during the airfield’s operating hours. Check this condition before you travel.
More experiences
Strausberg’s treetop adventure course has twelve courses with a total length of 2.7 kilometres, as well as zip lines up to 100 metres long. For a different kind of activity, Ticking Clock in Strausberg offers an escape room experience. Details about the treetop adventure course and the availability of the escape room may change; check the latest information before planning a visit.
This gives you a choice of water-based activities, longer or shorter hikes, historic sites and individual activities. When looking for a hotel in Strausberg, it helps to first decide which of these themes matter most to you during your stay.
