Seelow is one of the municipalities in the Märkisch-Oderland district. The town brings together the Seelow Heights Memorial, culture at the Old Steam Bakery and the Oderbruch Railway Cycling Route. This lets you choose destinations to suit the purpose of your trip without assuming the same itinerary for every stay.

Seelow Heights Memorial: History and Views

The Seelow Heights Memorial was inaugurated on 27 November 1945. At the memorial site, soldiers of the Red Army and residents of Seelow created a burial site for Red Army soldiers who had fallen. The memorial also addresses the suffering of concentration camp prisoners, forced labourers and the European civilian population. Its focus therefore extends beyond the fallen soldiers to include different groups whose suffering is commemorated at this site.

From the grounds, the panorama stretches across the Oderbruch towards Küstrin and Reitweiner Höhe. In the wider destination of Märkisch-Oderland, the Seelow Heights Memorial and Museum offers a multimedia exhibition about the events of the war, its consequences and the use of the memorial site. The exhibition is available in German and English. The outdoor grounds are freely accessible regardless of opening hours. Check the latest information about the exhibition before your visit.

Old Steam Bakery: Architectural History and Culture

The Old Steam Bakery offers a different focus. The two-storey brick building was constructed in the mid-19th century as a factory and commercial building. Its former commercial function and its current sociocultural use therefore exist side by side. As an event venue, the Old Steam Bakery presents changing exhibitions of painting and sculpture every three months. The open ceramics workshop also offers an opportunity for artistic work. Architecture, changing exhibitions and hands-on artistic activity provide different ways to engage with culture here. The exhibition programme may change, so checking the current offerings can help with planning.

Cycling between Seelow and Letschin

The 48-kilometre Oderbruch Railway Cycling Route starts at Seelow station and ends at Letschin station. It follows the former railway line through the quiet landscape of the Oderbruch from Seelow to Letschin. Its length, starting point and destination make the route a distinct focus for planning alongside the cultural destinations. RB 60 is listed for travel to Seelow and departure from Letschin; check train connections and route details before setting off.

Seelow Church and Schweizerhaus Seelow are also along the cycling route. Schweizerhaus is currently open to visitors only on set dates. If you would like to include it in your plans, check those dates in advance. This lets you combine the cycling tour with a visit to Schweizerhaus, provided a date fits your stay.

Finding Your Bearings When Looking for Accommodation

The Seelow Tourist Information Centre provides recommendations online and in person for inspected and certified accommodation, as well as information about equipment rentals for leisure activities. This can help you find your bearings when looking for a place to stay or planning a cycling trip. Offers may change. Seelow therefore offers several clearly distinct focuses for choosing destinations: the history and exhibition at the memorial, the cultural offerings at the Old Steam Bakery, or the route through the Oderbruch.
