Dahme-Spreewald: Cycling Routes, Museums and Water Experiences
Accommodation in Dahme-Spreewald
Together with the Spreewald, the Dahme Lake District is part of the travel region in the district of Dahme-Spreewald. The area’s natural, historical and cultural attractions give the region a variety of highlights. As you plan, you can decide whether you’d like to spend most of your time outdoors, explore places steeped in history or take a trip on the water.
Landscape, cycling routes and views
More than 1,000 kilometres of well-developed, fully signposted cycling routes connect the landscapes and places to visit in the Spreewald and Dahme Lake District. If you’re planning a particular route, check the conditions before setting off. The “Dahme-Heideseen” Nature Park is another point of reference for nature lovers: it lies in the districts of Dahme-Spreewald and Oder-Spree and encompasses more than 100 lakes. The geographical detail matters here, as the nature park extends across both districts.
For a different view of the surroundings, visit the “Buchenhain” nature trail. The path leads to a seven-metre-high observation tower with views of the surrounding area. You can combine a walk along the trail with a stop at the viewpoint.
On the water and in the Spreewald
Schlepzig harbour is the starting point for punt or paddle boat trips along a three-kilometre circular route through the Spreewald village. Both types of trip follow the same circular route, so choose the one that suits how you’d like to explore. As operations may be seasonal, check in advance whether your preferred trip is available during your visit.
Schlepzig is also home to the farm museum, housed in a completely preserved rural building complex dating from 1818. The authentically furnished farmhouse portrays life on a small farm. The historic complex and its furnishings tell different parts of the story of rural life: the buildings provide the setting, while the living spaces bring everyday life into focus.
Museums, town history and architecture
In Königs Wusterhausen, the Funkerberg Museum stands at the original site of Germany’s first radio broadcast. It was transmitted from Königs Wusterhausen on 22 December 1920 as a Christmas concert. The museum also holds regular demonstrations where you can see a 1,000 hp Deutz diesel engine in action. Check the demonstration dates before your visit.
Königs Wusterhausen Palace can only be visited as part of a guided tour. Visitors learn about the life and royal living quarters of Frederick William I, as well as his era. The guided tour is therefore essential to a visit, providing insight into both the rooms and their historical context.
In Bestensee, the fieldstone church is an example of a medieval village church; it was probably built towards the end of the 14th century. In Mittenwalde, guided town tours offer a way to explore the historic town of farming burghers. Sights on the tour include St. Moritz Church and the local history museum. Advance booking is required, and tours have a minimum group size.
The Salzmarkt 5 Museum in Mittenwalde is housed in a restored half-timbered building and tells the story of the town’s more than 700-year history in its rooms. St. Moritz Church also offers a viewpoint: its church tower has viewing platforms at a height of around 50 metres, reached by climbing approximately 200 steps. If you’re planning to visit the tower, take the steps into account and check current access arrangements in advance.
