Märkische Heide combines a meadow landscape shaped by water with village churches and a historic ensemble. These different themes can offer practical guidance when choosing your destination: nature, architectural history, or a route for a trip on foot or by bike. If you are looking for a hotel, consider which of these highlights you want to shape your stay.

The municipality of Märkische Heide lies east of the Unterspreewald, on the edge of the UNESCO Spreewald Biosphere Reserve, and extends across several protected landscape areas. The examples are located in different villages: the Landgraben lowland near Dürrenhofe, churches in Groß Leuthen and Kuschkow, and the ensemble of manor house, park, and farmyard in Pretschen.

Meadow Landscapes and Waterbirds

The Dürrenhofe Landgraben lowland is a meadow landscape covering about 420 hectares, with numerous narrow ditches and branch ditches. The Landgraben runs through its center as the main watercourse. The remaining wet meadows serve as resting and roosting places for waterbirds. The landscape can therefore be understood both through its network of waterways and its importance as a resting place for waterbirds.

There is an information point about the entire Landgraben lowland on Kirchsteig in Dürrenhofe. Its focus extends beyond a single ditch and helps visitors see the waterways and wet meadows as parts of the same landscape.

Village Churches and Architectural History

The church in Groß Leuthen was consecrated in 1857, replacing a predecessor building from the 16th century, and was built in the round-arch style using bog ironstone. The church contains tombstones belonging to the Schenk von Landsberg family, who built the Renaissance predecessor of the present-day church. Architectural history and family connections thus come together in one place: the church and the tombstones link different chapters in the village’s history.

The village church in Kuschkow was built around 1830 to 1840 as a rectangular plastered building in the round-arch style. Both churches share the round-arch style, but differ in their construction dates and materials: 1857 and bog ironstone in Groß Leuthen, around 1830 to 1840 and plaster in Kuschkow. This comparison offers a concrete architectural and historical distinction between the two places.

In Pretschen, the combination of manor house, park, and farmyard provides a vivid example of the agricultural history of Niederlausitz. Unlike the village churches, the focus here is not on a single building, but on how the three elements work together. This adds a distinct aspect of regional agricultural history to the story of church architecture.

Cycling, Walking, and Village Life

The route from the village beach in Groß Leuthen to Bückchen is suitable for cycling tours in the Spreewald and relaxing walks. It appeals both to visitors traveling by bike and to those who would rather explore the route on foot.

At Kuschkower Kirchstraße 16, Christa Kowalke regularly welcomes guests into the informal atmosphere of a home with a rustic barn. This adds a personal, home-focused touch to the architectural and landscape themes.
