Freiwalde, a district of Bersteland, lies in the Baruth glacial valley between Kabel and Kaulschen Graben. The Berste flows through Freiwalde and on past Reichwalde toward Lübben and the Spree. Freiwalde connects the Berste landscape with the village’s architectural history. If you are looking for a hotel in Bersteland, first consider whether you are particularly interested in nature, historic architectural styles, or walking and cycling routes.

Landscape between water and woodland

The course of the Berste gives Freiwalde a direct connection to the water landscape: the river runs through the village and continues past Reichwalde toward Lübben and the Spree. In Niewitz, the pine forest lies 500 to 1,000 meters from the village. Fields and meadows lie between the settlement and the forest; the Berste runs along the northern edge of the village. Thus, descriptions of the two places focus on different landscape features: the river in Freiwalde, and the sequence of settlement, fields, meadows, and forest in Niewitz.

Harvests are also part of Niewitz’s landscape. Spreewaldhof Niewitz is associated with cucumber growing and strawberry harvesting, which shape the area around the village. This adds the area’s agricultural use to the picture of the landscape, rather than reducing it to forest and water.

Freiwalde: architectural history and village traditions

Archaeological investigations link Freiwalde’s settlement history to the Bronze Age. Twenty hectares of the site of the former industrial area have been designated an archaeological monument. This offers a distinct perspective on local history alongside the surviving buildings: one tells the story of long-term settlement, the other of visible architecture from different periods.

A Sorbian-influenced half-timbered house with a fodder gallery survives at Hauptstraße 13. Freiwalde Church provides a different architectural accent: it is a small, rectangular Neo-Gothic brick church, consecrated in 1871. The Freiwalde farmhouse parlor at Am Sandberg 37 is said to be approximately 500 years old and the oldest house in the village in its original form. The half-timbered house, brick church, and farmhouse parlor offer different perspectives on the village’s architectural history.

In Niewitz, Fastnacht and Zampern are part of the village’s traditional customs. These include a costumed parade during which money, bacon, and eggs are collected. If you are interested in taking part, check the dates and participation requirements before your trip, as both may vary.

Reichwalde: village walk and cycling route

A walk through Reichwalde can take in four half-timbered houses from the 18th and 19th centuries, a former local inn, and well-kept front gardens. If you would rather be by the water, you can walk or cycle along the Mühlgraben and the Berste and enjoy nature. These are different ways to explore Reichwalde on foot or by bike; no particular duration is implied for the walk.

The Gurkenradweg is approximately three kilometers from Reichwalde and can be reached via the district road. This distance is an estimate. Check the signage and road conditions before setting off. When planning, you can choose between a walk focused on village details and a bike ride connected to the regional cycling route.

In the wider destination of Dahme-Spreewald

Beyond Bersteland, the Dahme-Spreewald destination offers its own regional context: together with the Spreewald, the Dahme lake district is part of the travel region in the district of Dahme-Spreewald, which features natural, historical, and cultural attractions. More than 1,000 kilometers of well-maintained, fully signposted cycling routes connect the landscapes and places to visit in the Spreewald and Dahme lake region. The “Dahme-Heideseen” Nature Park lies in the districts of Dahme-Spreewald and Oder-Spree and encompasses more than 100 lakes.

The region’s cultural attractions also have their own distinctive focus. The Schlepzig Farm Museum is housed in a fully preserved rural building complex dating from 1818; the faithfully furnished home depicts small-scale farming life. In Mittenwalde, around 200 steps lead to viewing platforms at a height of approximately 50 meters on the tower of St. Moritz Church. Check current access conditions before climbing. Königs Wusterhausen Palace can only be visited on a guided tour; check tour dates before making plans.
