Bestensee – Lakes, Nature and Village History
Accommodation in Bestensee
Bestensee combines several lakes with natural and cultural attractions. When planning your stay, you can choose from swimming spots, a longer circular route, a park with various stops and traces of the village’s history. The topics that interest you most can help guide your trip and your search for a hotel in Bestensee.
Lakes and trails around Bestensee
Pätzer Vordersee covers about 1.7 km² and is part of Dahme-Heideseen Nature Park. Bestensee and the district of Pätz are located on its shores. Its connections also help you find your way around the lake landscape: to the south, the lake connects to Pätzer Hintersee, and to the north, to Todnitzsee. Knowing the names of the lakes and their relative positions makes it easier to plan your time by the water.
Two different swimming spots are worth considering for a day at the lake. Großer Tonteich, also known as Körbiskruger Tonsee, has a sandy beach, as well as a sunbathing lawn and a naturist beach. The natural swimming area at Todnitzsee has a large sunbathing lawn and a wide beach. Facilities at the swimming spots may change, so check the current conditions before planning your trip.
If you would rather experience the lakes on a longer outing, there is a circular route around Pätzer Vordersee and Pätzer Hintersee. It is 16.6 kilometres long and starts and ends at Bestensee railway station. The route passes through forests and meadows and runs through Liepegrund, in the landscape of Heideseen Nature Park. Its length and starting point can help you plan your time, without specifying a particular walking time or level of difficulty. Bestensee railway station, served by regional trains (RE), is listed for travel to and from the route. Check the timetable before your trip.
Park, nature and local highlights
The LAUSL Park brings together several different attractions. A nature trail passes information boards, nesting aids and nature-themed puzzles; there is also a barefoot path. A playground is located beneath apple trees. An exhibition of old agricultural equipment adds a historical perspective on farming to the nature and play activities. When planning your visit, you can choose whether you are most interested in the learning stations, the barefoot path or the exhibition.
Wood carvings by a chainsaw artist can be seen in the Generations Forest and on the adjoining vineyard. From LAUSL Park, Mühlen-Weinberg Bestensee and the railway station are just a few minutes’ walk away. These short connections help you plan a visit to the places mentioned together; they should not be confused with the 16.6-kilometre circular route around the lakes.
Village church and history
The fieldstone church in Bestensee is an example of a medieval village church. Murals on its south wall are believed to date from the early 15th century. The church is also part of the “Open Church” initiative. If you are planning a visit, check access arrangements in advance.
Bestensee offers a range of starting points for a stay: its lakes and swimming spots, a longer circular route that starts and ends at the railway station, the attractions in LAUSL Park or the fieldstone church.
