The Krausnick Hills give Krausnick-Groß Wasserburg a forested highland perspective; cycling and hiking trails, as well as water-based excursions, add to the options for planning your trip. If you choose your destination based on landscape and activities, you can consider the wooded heights, the named land routes and the water access point in Groß Wasserburg separately.

High Ground and Views at the Wehlaberg

The Krausnick Hills, also called the Bergspreewald, rise within the forested municipality of Krausnick-Groß Wasserburg. At 144.1 metres, the Wehlaberg is the highest point; the maximum elevation of the Krausnick Hills is given as 144 metres above sea level (NHN). The range lies about 100 metres above the Unterspreewald, which adjoins it to the east. This makes it possible to understand the landscape both through a specific high point and in relation to the neighbouring lowlands.

A 28-metre-high wooden observation tower stands on the Wehlaberg. From there, you can enjoy panoramic views of the forests and the Krausnick Hills. The two height figures refer to different things: 144.1 metres is the highest elevation, while 28 metres is the height of the tower. Together, they give an impression of the landscape and the structure that defines the viewpoint.

Distinguish Cycling and Hiking Routes by Location

The Gurkenradweg and Hofjagdweg cycle routes pass through Krausnick. The E 10 European long-distance path passes through Groß Wasserburg. Another hiking route starts in Schlepzig, runs through Krausnick and Groß Wasserburg, and leads into the Bergspreewald. The locations associated with each route therefore differ: the two named cycle routes pass through Krausnick, while the E 10 crosses Groß Wasserburg. The hiking route from Schlepzig includes both places along its route.

When shortlisting routes, it is therefore important to consider not just the route name, but also which places lie along it. The cycle routes are associated with Krausnick; the hiking routes include Groß Wasserburg and, in the case of the route from Schlepzig, Krausnick as well. This lets you compare the different routes by location without treating them as a single trail.

Water Excursions and Archery

From the boat departure point in Groß Wasserburg, visitors can set off directly for the Unterspreewald by canoe or paddle boat. This names a specific starting point for a water-based activity, in addition to the trails on land. The types of boats and the starting point for the Unterspreewald give this option a different character from the cycling and hiking routes.

Another distinct activity is the “Zum Bogenbiwak” archery course, set in an approximately 10-hectare wooded area on the edge of the Spreewald community of Groß Wasserburg. The course currently has 24 stations. There, amateur archers can discover lifelike animals made from specialist foam and try traditional instinctive archery. The local activities therefore differ in form as well: for cycling and hiking routes, the locations along the route are key, while “Zum Bogenbiwak” is characterised by its stations and style of archery.
