Alt Zauche-Wußwerk combines a village landscape shaped by meadows and forests with brick architecture, traces of history and the waterways of the Oberspreewald. When planning your trip, you can focus on several different things: village history, hiking and cycling tours, or boat trips with specific starting points.

Meadows, Forests and Village History

The district of Alt Zauche is surrounded by meadows and forests and lies on the northern edge of the Hochwald forest in the Oberspreewald. The Hochwald is characterised by trees several hundred years old and numerous scenic waterways. The village, surrounded by meadows and forests, and the distinctive forest with its waterways offer contrasting landscape experiences. When making your choice, consider whether you would rather focus on the area around the district or on the Hochwald.

Brick houses shape the village landscape of Alt Zauche; some have retained their original form and design. Alt Zauche was first mentioned in official records in 1347 under the name “Alte Niewe.” Its architecture and name history offer two different ways to discover the character of the village: the houses shape its visible appearance, while the historical name provides an early point of reference.

Tours and Starting Points

Wußwerk is considered a starting point for cycling and hiking routes. Cycling tours from Alt Zauche explore the landscape of the Spreewald Biosphere Reserve. The named starting locations help you fit each activity into your daily itinerary.

Alt Zauche is considered an ideal starting point for boat trips into the Hochwald. A boat trip from the Alt Zauche ferry harbour passes through the first lock and then continues through the protected alder forest of the Hochwald. The current boat-trip departure point associated with Wußwerk is on the Nordfließ, more than five kilometres outside the village. When planning, both the specific starting point and the route matter. Check where your chosen tour begins before setting out.
