Ludwigsburg: Baroque, Celtic Trails and Wine Landscapes
Accommodation in Ludwigsburg
Ludwigsburg combines Baroque architecture with Celtic history and excursions into wine landscapes. Ludwigsburg Residential Palace is one of the largest Baroque buildings in Europe to have been preserved in its original form. There are also trails that explore archaeological sites, winegrowing and literature. Many of the tours described lead through the district of Ludwigsburg, offering a broader view of the region.
Baroque architecture and gardens in Ludwigsburg
The Residential Palace gives the trip a distinct cultural and historical focus. Anyone interested in Baroque buildings will find a particularly large example here, preserved in its original form. Another attraction in Ludwigsburg is Blühendes Barock, a garden show featuring a fairytale garden. The palace and garden offer different themes for your stay: Baroque architecture on the one hand, and gardens and a fairytale world on the other.
Celtic history on trails and in the museum
The Celtic Trail connects nine significant finds from the Celtic period along a route of around 35 kilometres through the district of Ludwigsburg. The sites can also be explored digitally: the Keltenweg AR app brings them to life with interactive VR and AR features. This means that digital elements are part of the experience alongside the stops at the sites themselves.
At the Hochdorf/Enz Celtic Museum, a faithfully reconstructed, richly decorated burial chamber of a Celtic prince offers an impression of this archaeological period. The museum also provides insights into the everyday life and crafts of early Celtic people. This makes for a complementary experience: individual finds along the Celtic Trail and a more in-depth exploration of the subject at the museum.
Winegrowing among steep slopes and educational trails
Terraced, steep vineyards along the Neckar and Enz rivers shape the landscape of the district. Winegrowing has a centuries-old tradition here and includes more than 150 winegrowing businesses, over 2,000 hectares of planted vineyards and six wine cooperatives. Anyone interested not only in the landscape but also in cultivation and production can explore a range of educational and experience trails.
The Wunnenstein Wine Experience Trail is a walking route of around four kilometres, with 60 illustrated information boards about winegrowing and winemaking. Along the trail are viewpoints, restaurants, seating areas, barbecue spots and vineyard huts. In Sachsenheim, the 1.9-kilometre Geigersberg wine trail follows a circular route past information boards about nature and wine culture, as well as rest areas. In terms of distance, it is shorter than the Wunnenstein trail.
The Käsbergkeller Wine Experience Trail in Mundelsheim also offers hands-on ways to explore its themes: its four interactive stations cover the structure of the vine, winemaking, seasonal work in the vineyard and animals in the vineyards. A literary perspective adds another dimension to wine on the Wine and Literature Trail through the Schiller town of Marbach and the Bottwartal valley. The route is 35 kilometres long in total and features 15 literary stops along the way.
Hiking trails, from circular routes to literary trails
For a hike through varied landscapes, consider the Milchsäules circular trail: it is 12.5 kilometres long and leads from Enzweihingen to Hochdorf along forest and field paths and through orchards. The circular trail at Rosswager Halde starts and ends in Vaihingen an der Enz. Over 15.4 kilometres, it passes through the steep vineyards of Rosswager Halde. The two routes therefore differ both in length and in the landscapes described.
Cycling routes in the district of Ludwigsburg
The Jubilee Cycle Route runs for 162 kilometres through 21 municipalities in the district; it has been fully signposted since summer 2025. The Neckar Valley Cycle Route offers a different kind of ride: this long-distance route, approximately 350 kilometres long, has almost no climbs and runs steadily downhill. It is also considered suitable for beginner cyclists and families with children. In the district of Ludwigsburg, it passes the wine viewpoints along the steep slopes.
The Enz Valley Cycle Route is just over 100 kilometres long and runs from the source of the Enz near Enzklösterle to its confluence with the Neckar in Walheim. Highlights in the district include Kaltenstein Castle in Vaihingen an der Enz and the terraced steep vineyards along the river. The Metter Cycle Route, just under 29 kilometres long, runs between Sternenfels-Diefenbach and Bietigheim-Bissingen. Along the way, vineyards on hillside slopes, orchards, stream landscapes and shady forests shape the scenery; hilltop benches and benches invite you to linger and enjoy the views. The district also offers cycling routes past Celtic attractions and historic mills, as well as through river valleys; there are suitable options for e-bike riders too.
Choose hotels to suit your travel plans
When looking for hotels in Ludwigsburg, it is worth first deciding what matters most to you: the Residential Palace and garden show, Celtic sites, wine trails, or longer hikes and cycling tours. When choosing, consider which places you would like to include in your trip, and check how the location of a particular accommodation fits with your plans. This way, you can choose a hotel based on the experiences that matter most to you during your stay in the district.
