Asperg: Between the Celtic Way and Hohenasperg
Accommodation in Asperg
Hohenasperg and the Celtic Way give a stay in Asperg a clear focus on landscape and history. There is also a museum, a historical circular trail and the Asperg outdoor swimming pool. This offers something for different interests, from outdoor activities to archaeology and local history.
Hohenasperg: Views and landscape
Hohenasperg is 356 metres high, lies north of Asperg and rises about 90 metres above the town. From there, visitors can enjoy sweeping views across the middle Neckar region. The hill is also a destination for those who want to combine landscape and history.
The way Hohenasperg has been used has also shaped the landscape: the hill has been a protected nature area since 1938. Gypsum mining on its northern slope ended after a landslide. These events are part of the context of Hohenasperg, as is its prominent rise above the town.
The Celtic Way and archaeological traces
The Celtic Way is a cycling and hiking route that passes through Asperg and other towns and connects nine Celtic monuments. It is about 30 kilometres long; the cycling route can also be ridden as a circular tour of about 55 kilometres. This distinction is useful when planning: the longer distance refers to the cycling loop. The Lion Gate on Hohenasperg marks the start or end of the route.
Kleinaspergle, a Celtic burial mound, is part of the archaeological setting around Hohenasperg. A richly furnished princely grave was found in a side chamber and is dated to around 420 BC. The Celtic Way connects monuments like these with a route through Asperg and other towns; Kleinaspergle adds a tangible insight into the region’s early history.
Museum and historic trails
The Hohenasperg Museum, housed in a former arsenal building in the fortress, presents the history of Hohenasperg and its prisoners. The exhibition is based on original objects and documents. Visitors interested in individual places and how they were used can also take in the Historic Circular Trail in the hilltop fortress, which passes accessible buildings and facilities. Information panels explain their history, significance and use.
The Celtic Way AR app offers another perspective on the Celtic sites. It enables a digital journey back in time to the world of the Celts and presents new perspectives on burial monuments and archaeological excavations. It also enables users to take part together in Celtic burial rituals and visit the former princely seat on Hohenasperg.
Outdoor swimming and guided experiences
The Asperg outdoor swimming pool lies at the foot of Hohenasperg. The non-swimmers’ pool has an 84-metre slide, a wild-water channel and a bubbling pool; the large swimming pool has a diving facility. As opening may depend on the season, check the season before your visit.
The classic guided tour of Hohenasperg covers its history, from Celtic princely seat to high-nobility castle, state fortress and prison. It lasts 1.5 to 2 hours; coordinate arrangements with the guide. This allows you to plan a longer, in-depth exploration of the hill’s history.
“Wengert, Wahn und Weiberzeche” (Vineyards, Delusion and Women’s Wine Feast) combines a wine and history experience: a walk through the steep vineyard slopes followed by a traditional snack platter served by a winemaker. Arrange the date and booking with the guide. The tour offers a different focus from the Celtic Way and the history of the fortress, centring on the wine-growing landscape and sharing a meal together.
