Kirchheim am Neckar is shaped by the Neckar landscape and terraced vineyards. Hiking, cycling, viticulture and St. Maurice's Church offer different ways to enjoy a stay. This diversity can be seen in the trails, local wine presentations and architectural history.

Vineyards and Hiking Trails

Kapellenberg is situated at a tight bend in the Neckar and is one of the steepest vineyard sites in the region. The Kapellenberg Circuit runs across vineyard terraces along the Neckar loop; along the way, there are views of the Neckar Valley and the sinter formations on the riverbank. The route is six kilometres long and includes two climbs and a descent via vineyard steps.

The Kirchheim Hiking Trail is a marked, ten-kilometre circular route that takes about two and a half hours. It passes through vineyards and orchards and by viewpoints such as an old vineyard hut and the Umlaufberg, a hill formed by an old bend in the Neckar. It also passes the Trauf natural monument and the Wasen nature reserve; Wasen is considered one of the last remnants of floodplain forest along the Neckar. The route details are easy to compare: six kilometres for the Kapellenberg Circuit, and ten kilometres and about two and a half hours for the marked hiking trail.

Viticulture in Kirchheim

Since 2019, the municipality has cultivated formerly fallow terrace plots and produced its own terrace wines. At the Kirchheim Wine Terrace, local associations and members of the WG Stromberg-Zabergäu offer wine service and present their wines almost every Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Check the date before your visit.

Cycling and Canoeing

Kirchheim am Neckar is located directly on the Neckar Valley Cycle Route. The surrounding area, with its vines, fields and forests, is ideal for longer rides. RegioRadStuttgart stations in Kirchheim support one-way rides with a return trip by S-Bahn; check the current station status before travelling. Canoeing is also one of the sports and leisure activities available on the stretch between Stuttgart and Kirchheim am Neckar.

St. Maurice's Church

St. Maurice's Church began as a Romanesque choir-tower church and later acquired Gothic pointed-arch windows, a Gothic portal, a choir net vault and a cross-vaulted sacristy. Its Romanesque origins and Gothic additions form a clear contrast; those interested in architectural history will find several architectural features in one building.

Trails and Culture in Ludwigsburg District

The landscape of Ludwigsburg District is shaped by steep terraced vineyards along the Neckar and Enz rivers. The Celts Trail connects nine significant Celtic-era finds on a route of about 35 kilometres through the district. The Hochdorf/Enz Celtic Museum includes a faithfully reconstructed, richly decorated burial chamber of a Celtic prince and offers insights into the everyday life and crafts of early Celtic people. The Celts Trail AR app brings the nine archaeological sites to life with interactive VR and AR features. The WeinErlebnisWeg Wunnenstein is also located in Ludwigsburg District: this approximately four-kilometre walking trail features 60 illustrated information panels on viticulture and winemaking, as well as viewpoints, restaurants, seating, barbecue areas and WengertschĂĽtzen huts along the route.
