Löchgau brings together wine country, village history and walking routes around the Stromberg. Steep vineyard slopes are part of the municipality, along with fertile fields, meadows and extensive woodland. The municipality covers a total of 1,095 hectares, of which 277 hectares are woodland. Löchgau is in the district of Ludwigsburg, in the Stuttgart administrative region of Baden-Württemberg.

Wine Country and Trails

Löchgau is considered a starting point for hikes around the Stromberg. For a specific local route, take the historic village walk: this 2.4-kilometre route circles the former village rampart. Hikes around the Stromberg and a walk with a clearly defined connection to village history are thus two different options.

The vineyards also give Löchgau its distinctive character. They are considered among the finest in Württemberg. In 1994, a local Löchgau wine was brought to market in collaboration with the Besigheim Felsengarten Winery. This historic connection complements a look at today’s vineyard slopes and the landscape, where fields, meadows and woodland also have their place.

History and Art in the Village Landscape

Parts of the village wall are recognised as a cultural monument; the wall was first mentioned in 1530. The 2.4-kilometre historic village walk follows the former village rampart, offering a distinct way to explore the village’s history. St Peter’s Church adds to this historic impression: its interior can be visited by arrangement with the parish. Arrange your visit before travelling.

A cast of a Roman Jupiter-Giant Column stands in front of the wine press. There are also sculptures by Prof. K.-H. Seemann in the village centre. The 3B Wine Views Tour also turns the spotlight on sculptures by Karl-Henning Seemann in Löchgau. Those interested in public art will find another aspect of the town here, alongside its historic buildings.

Leisure and Seasonal Conditions

Löchgau has an outdoor swimming pool for leisure activities. It operates seasonally; check its opening and access before your trip. This practical consideration differs from arranging a visit to St Peter’s Church: the pool’s seasonal operation is relevant, while the church requires advance arrangements with the parish.

The Wider Setting: District of Ludwigsburg

Beyond Löchgau, the district of Ludwigsburg offers a broader landscape setting. The district lies in the Neckar Valley and between the Stromberg, Strohgäu and the Löwenstein Mountains. Terraced vineyard slopes along the Neckar and Enz are among its defining landscape features. This regional perspective complements Löchgau’s own vineyard slopes, fields, meadows and woodland.

One of the district’s distinct routes is the Wunnenstein Wine Experience Trail. The walking route is about four kilometres long and features 60 illustrated information boards about viticulture and winemaking. Viewpoints, restaurants, seating areas, barbecue spots and Wengertschützen huts are located along the route. The Keltenweg offers a different thematic perspective: it connects nine significant Celtic-era finds along a route of about 35 kilometres through the district of Ludwigsburg. The Keltenweg AR app brings the nine archaeological sites to life with interactive VR and AR features.

Ludwigsburg Residential Palace is also a distinct cultural landmark in the destination of Ludwigsburg. It is one of Europe’s largest Baroque buildings to have survived in its original form. The regional setting therefore ranges from wine country and themed trails to a significant Baroque building, while Löchgau itself has its own focus on village history, sculptures and landscape.
