Ludwigsburg: Discover Baroque Culture and Hotels
Accommodation in Ludwigsburg
Ludwigsburg brings together a residential palace, Baroque cityscape, gardens and museums to create a destination with a clear cultural focus. If you are looking for a hotel, considering what you plan to focus on can help you choose: Would you mainly like to see palace rooms and explore the city’s history, discover collections, or spend time in the garden? Choosing a theme gives your plans direction and shapes the character of your stay.
Residential Palace and Guided Tours
Ludwigsburg Residential Palace has 452 rooms and is one of the largest original, well-preserved palaces in Europe. Standard guided tours show a selection of the most important rooms; the exact route may vary. The number of rooms gives an impression of the palace’s scale, while the tours focus on selected rooms. The classic family tour presents history in a playful way, making it an experience for children and adults alike. This means that, alongside the architecture, the way history is presented is another focus to choose from.
Baroque Cityscape and Museums
The Baroque cityscape is characterised by straight, wide streets that intersect at right angles, as well as two-storey townhouses in soft pastel colours. In the historic centre, the arcaded market square is defined by two Baroque churches. The view thus extends from the cityscape’s regular layout to a striking square with arcades and churches.
The six historic gatehouses are part of the former city wall complex. Today, they serve as museums, archives and exhibition spaces. The Museum of Art and Cultural History of the City of Ludwigsburg and Württemberg presents a permanent exhibition as well as changing special exhibitions on historical and contemporary subjects. These changing exhibitions add further perspectives to the museum’s permanent themes.
The Ceramics Museum in the residential palace presents Ludwigsburg porcelain and ceramic art across around 2,000 square metres, from medieval stoneware to 20th-century studio ceramics. Highlights include a study collection of 2,000 pieces of Ludwigsburg porcelain. The history of the materials and the collection are presented side by side. Ludwigsburg Palace Theatre is also a special focus of cultural history: with its original stage machinery, it is one of the oldest surviving theatres of its kind. Here, the stage technology itself becomes part of the historical interest.
Gardens and Family-Friendly Experiences
Blühendes Barock is a year-round garden show surrounding the residential palace. The North Garden and South Garden offer particularly beautiful views of the palace. The Fairy-Tale Garden features more than 50 lovingly designed fairy tales; a boat ride on the Fairy-Tale Stream is included in the admission price for Blühendes Barock. The Sardinian Garden has an aviary with flamingos and storks.
An annual pumpkin exhibition takes place at Blühendes Barock; dates vary by season. Check the specific event dates if this is a deciding factor for your trip. This makes it possible to distinguish between the garden’s year-round attractions and seasonal event dates when planning.
Also in the Ludwigsburg district: Trails and Wine Country
Terraced, steep vineyard slopes along the Neckar and Enz rivers shape the landscape of the Ludwigsburg district. Two trails offer different thematic focuses: the Celtic Trail connects nine significant Celtic-era finds along a route of about 35 kilometres through the district. The Wunnenstein Wine Experience Trail, by contrast, is a walking route of about four kilometres, with 60 illustrated information boards about viticulture and winemaking. Viewpoints, restaurants, seating areas, barbecue spots and vineyard huts are located along the trail. This offers a choice between archaeological finds along a longer route and a shorter walk focused on wine.
