Tamm: Historic Town Center, Church Tours and Hiking Trails

Tamm is best explored through two specific interests: its historic town center and the tours offered there, and the marked hiking trails that start in Tamm or pass through the town. Cultural offerings and varied landscapes round out the experience. When planning your stay, landmarks, tours and trail lengths can help you choose your daily destinations.

Historic Town Center and Church Tours

The old town center still clearly retains the character of a linear village, with half-timbered buildings whose gables face the street. On a guided tour of the historic town center, you can also visit the wine press, St. Bartholomew’s Church and the old town hall inside. These three buildings are among the oldest in Tamm. St. Bartholomew’s Church was first mentioned in a document in 1331, giving the town center a connection to a long history.

A tour of St. Bartholomew’s Church also offers the opportunity to climb the church tower and visit the tower room and bell chamber. Church tours are available by arrangement. A guided tour of the historic and modern town center can be conducted in German or French. If you prefer a particular language, it is best to ask when arranging a time.

There is also a specific landmark to help you find your way around town: Tamm railway station is about a two-minute walk from the Bürgersaal. This refers to the route between these two locations.

Choose Hiking Trails by Length and Route

Three circular hiking trails in Tamm start and end at the town hall or railway station. Red, blue or green ram symbols mark the way. In addition, the Tamm branch of the Swabian Alb Association maintains about five kilometers of blue-marked hiking trails. They run from the Rotenacker Forest through Tamm to Hohenasperg.

The three Hammel trails differ in both length and the destinations they visit. At 13.8 kilometers, Hammel Trail 1 is the longest. It runs from Tamm along the Leudelsbach and the Enz and onward to the Rotenacker Forest. Hammel Trail 2 is 12.4 kilometers long and runs from Tamm via Bissingen and along the Enz, also to the Rotenacker Forest.

Hammel Trail 3 is 12.3 kilometers long. From Tamm, it passes Hohenasperg and continues to Lake Monrepos and the palace. Trails 2 and 3 therefore differ in length by just 0.1 kilometers, but their destinations and routes differ considerably. When choosing a trail, you can consider not only the distance but also the places and landscapes along the way.

Culture and Seasonal Impressions

Kulturwerkstatt Tamm organizes open-mic evenings, concerts, theater evenings, literary dinners and readings. Its main venue is the wine press in the historic town center. If you want to attend a particular type of event, check the dates in advance. This lets you plan a possible visit around the actual schedule without assuming that any particular event will be on.

At Christmas, Tamm’s large water tower is decorated with lights. This seasonal display may change. The landscape south of Tamm’s municipal area is also shaped by orchards, vineyards and other agricultural land use. The townscape’s half-timbered houses and historic buildings thus stand in contrast to a rural landscape.

A Route to Hohenasperg Nearby

Nearby, a route leads from Tamm to the northern side of Hohenasperg. Along the way, information is provided about gypsum mining, which continued until the beginning of the 20th century, as well as the geological structure and preservation of the witness hill. The route complements the themes of the town center and hiking with a look at the area’s geological history.
