The Allier River is 420 kilometres long and is considered one of Europe’s last wild rivers. In the département, river landscapes, gorges, forests, marshes and places steeped in history come together as different travel themes. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether nature, activities or culture is your priority, then choose your hotel location based on the places you want to visit.

River landscapes and distinctive scenery

The valleys of the Allier and Loire are shaped by meanders, side channels, pebble and sandy beaches, islands and riparian forests. The gorges of the Sioule, Bouble and Haut Cher are preserved natural areas with steep slopes and rocky cliffs. Rare species are found there, and the rivers are also fished for trout and grayling. The Gorges de la Bouble are a natural site managed by the département in Chantelle and Deneuille-les-Chantelle.

The peat bogs of the Montagne bourbonnaise offer a different kind of landscape. Their rich flora includes the rare bog rosemary and sundew. River valleys, rocky gorges and marshland thus offer different settings for spending time outdoors.

Trails, forests and activities

Allier has 18 managed Espaces naturels sensibles, most of which are open to independent exploration. Activities supported in these natural areas across the département include hiking, cycling, mountain biking, climbing, canoeing, paragliding and fishing. The Allier-PDIPR lists rural paths intended for hiking and other forms of soft mobility. It supports permanent routes and organised walks, providing a guide when you want to include trails in your travel plans.

The Forêt de Tronçais is the largest state forest in Allier and is considered Europe’s foremost oak forest; trees there reach heights of up to 30 metres. Visitor facilities in the forest are organised around five main access points. In the Vallon du Barbenan, you’ll find a natural site with a stream, rapids and waterfalls, as well as ecological diversity and a variety of habitats. If you want to compare natural areas, you can consider forests and waterways alongside the trails and activities that interest you during your stay.

Culture, history and regional specialities

The Musée Anne-de-Beaujeu is housed in a pavilion of the ducal palace, considered one of the first examples of French Renaissance architecture and decoration. The museum holds around 20,000 objects spanning art, archaeology and natural history. In Moulins, the Tour de l’Horloge dite Jacquemart was completed in 1408. Souvigny was one of Cluny’s five daughter houses and grew around the tombs of Saint Mayeul and Saint Odilo to become one of the western world’s major pilgrimage destinations. Charroux is the only village in Allier to hold the Les Plus Beaux Villages de France label.

Culinary traditions are also part of a trip: typical products from Allier include pâté aux pommes de terre and pompe aux grattons. For a cultural trip, the museum, Souvigny’s history and Charroux’s label each offer a different perspective on art, religious history and local character.

More experiences and spa towns

Le PAL combines an amusement park and a wildlife park across 40 hectares of natural surroundings. Paléopolis is a theme park dedicated to dinosaurs and palaeontology, with exhibitions and family activities. Vichy is one of the eleven European spa towns included in the UNESCO World Heritage property The Great Spa Towns of Europe. The département’s three Bourbonnais thermal spa towns are Bourbon-l’Archambault, Néris-les-Bains and Vichy. Alongside nature and culture, amusement parks and European spa-town history are therefore also possible themes for your trip.

Getting there and planning

Moulins-sur-Allier is served by Intercités trains on the Paris-Bercy–Clermont-Ferrand line. Check connections and timetables before travelling, as train services and schedules may change. The tourist office and historic centre are about 800 metres from the station. For cycling plans, the 2026–2028 edition of the Route Cœur de France à vélo connects Tours and Montluçon over 330 kilometres; 80 percent of the route is secured. Check the latest route information before setting off.

To choose where to stay, it helps to follow a clear order: first decide which places and activities matter to you, then choose your overnight stops accordingly. After that, you can plan your arrival and intended routes using the relevant information.
