Hérisson brings together medieval heritage and the Aumance River and its riverside paths. The fortress stands on a rocky outcrop above the valley; churches, a bell tower and historic houses reveal further layers of the town’s past. There are also signposted walking trails, including a circular route with a stated distance and a trail where you may hear birds, depending on the migration season. Cultural history, riverside scenery and opportunities for walking all come together here.

A townscape between fortress and river

Hérisson’s medieval fortress stands on a rocky outcrop above the Aumance Valley. The Chapelle du Calvaire was built in 1639 and offers sweeping views over the village of Hérisson. The two sites provide different perspectives: the fortress is defined by its position above the valley, while the chapel’s panorama takes in the village. Along the Quais de l’Aumance, a riverside promenade runs beside the river and is still used for walks.

The Porte de Gateuil also tells the story of the town’s historic character. Dating from the 14th and 15th centuries, the gate guarded the old bridge and the access route from Soulongis. The historic route into town passed through this gate from the south and east.

Buildings and history

The first known written mention of the Château d’Hérisson dates from between 1123 and 1133. The bell tower with the Saint-Sauveur porch is the last surviving remnant of Hérisson’s 12th-century collegiate church. Its top storey and spire were renovated at the end of the 17th century. On 3 November 1927, the bell tower was listed as a Monument historique by decree. The building phases mentioned here therefore range from its medieval origins to later renovations.

The former parish church of Saint-Pierre de Châteloy is predominantly Romanesque and features 14th- to 16th-century wall paintings; it is designated a Monument historique. The Maison dite « La Synagogue », at 3 Rue de l’Abbé Aury, offers a different glimpse of historic domestic life. It is a rare example of a high-quality medieval townhouse. Its roof frame is dated to around 1300. Surviving painted decorations include heraldic motifs and figurative scenes from the early 14th and 17th centuries. The house is privately owned, so do not plan on a regular interior visit.

The restored Musée de Hérisson opened in summer 2022 with a large-scale exhibition of postcards. It showed village life at the beginning of the 20th century; the current exhibition programme may vary. Concerts are organized in the church of Saint-Pierre de Châteloy in summer as part of the Festival de Musique en Bourbonnais. If you would like to plan your trip around a concert, check the dates in advance.

Walking trails along the Aumance

Hérisson has four signposted walking trails. The Sentier de l’Aumance is a 13.7-kilometre circular route starting in Hérisson. The stated distance and circular format give you a clear idea of this walk; check the route details locally.

The Circuit des Oiseaux runs along the banks of the Aumance. Depending on the migration season, it offers the chance to hear numerous birds associated with the river ecosystem. The two trails have different features: the circular format and distance are specified for the Sentier de l’Aumance, while the chance to hear birds on the Circuit des Oiseaux depends on the migration season.
