La Chabanne: Hiking, Landscapes and Heritage
Accommodation in La Chabanne
La Chabanne lies in the Besbre Valley, a river known for the quality of its water. Beech and granite shape the landscape, and the Besbre is one of the streams that cross the area. The Sapey is a tributary of the Besbre. These river and woodland features give your stay a distinctive landscape setting. There are several ways to explore the area: circular hiking trails, an educational trail along the Sapey and evidence of local history.
Hiking and Landscapes
The educational trail along the Le Sapey stream runs through deciduous and coniferous woodland and offers panoramic views over the Besbre Valley. For planning purposes, you can compare two circular hiking trails by distance and approximate time: Les Grands Bois is 9 kilometres long and takes about 2 hours 30 minutes; La Grande Serve also covers 9 kilometres and takes about 2 hours 15 minutes. The routes are the same length, while the estimated times differ by around 15 minutes. This difference may help you plan your day; both durations are approximate. The GR3 long-distance trail also passes through La Chabanne. Check the GR3 route before setting off. For the circular trails, check the route details again in case the course or signage has changed. Conditions on the educational trail may vary seasonally, so it is a good idea to check conditions before setting out.
Church and Local Heritage
The Church of Sainte-Marie offers different ways to explore the heritage through its construction phases and interior. Construction began in 1836; the church was extended between 1852 and 1858. During the restoration from 1933 to 1935, the painter Despalles from Cusset was commissioned to create devotional images. Sainte-Marie is also known for its Art Deco interior. The 19th-century construction phases and the interior features each offer a different perspective.
At La Presle, the visible remains include pits where animal hides were once soaked for tanning. The water from the stream at La Presle made it possible to establish a very active knitting mill. In general, combing, spinning and weaving were manual stages of the textile industry in the 17th and 18th centuries. Mills and a former lead-silver mine are also part of La Chabanne’s unusual heritage.
