Saint-Rémy-en-Rollat between the Allier landscape and cultural heritage
Accommodation in Saint-Rémy-En-Rollat
Saint-Rémy-en-Rollat combines nature-focused attractions with a range of insights into the history and culture of the area. Different interests may therefore influence your decision about where to look for a hotel: the landscape along the Allier, nature trails, exhibitions or local riding activities. Trail lengths and access conditions vary; high water and seasonal closure are particularly relevant for the Boucle Nature.
Nature at the Boire des Carrés
The Espace Naturel Sensible (ENS) de la boire des Carrés lies along the Allier River in the municipality of Saint-Rémy-en-Rollat. The Boire des Carrés covers 200 hectares and is a rich mosaic of river habitats. The area is accessible to people with reduced mobility and offers adapted interpretation facilities. As such facilities can change, it is advisable to check the specific options before your visit.
Two named nature trails differ in length: the Tour de la boire is 1.6 kilometres long, while the Circuit de la Héronnière is 2.4 kilometres long. The Tour de la boire is therefore the shorter of the two options by distance; the Circuit de la Héronnière is 0.8 kilometres longer. Local conditions may affect access to the trails.
The Boucle Nature has specific restrictions: it is in a flood zone and cannot be walked during high water. It is also closed every year in April, May and June because of the sensitive breeding season. Take these periods into account when planning, and check current access conditions before your visit.
Exhibitions and architectural history
La Cristallière offers 300 square metres of exhibition space. It has been open to visitors free of charge and for self-guided tours since 1969. Exhibits include minerals, fossils, natural stone objects, and silver and fashion jewellery adorned with gemstones. The exhibitions are housed in buildings with typical Bourbonnais architecture, bringing together geological and craft themes with the architectural style of the region.
La Cristallière also has a lapidary workshop. Custom jewellery is made there, and stones and crystals are worked or polished.
Another historic building is the Tour de Rollat. The brick-built tower is the only surviving remnant of the castle of the lords of Rollat. Archaeological finds also offer insight into the history of the municipality: between 1892 and 1895, pottery fragments were discovered in pits in fields in Saint-Rémy-en-Rollat. These pits were probably used as rubbish pits by a Gallo-Roman pottery workshop.
Riding activities and planning your visit
The Centre équestre Les Rollats offers riding lessons with ponies and horses, as well as adapted equestrian activities. During school holidays, it also offers courses for beginners and advanced riders. If riding activities fit your travel plans, enquire in advance about the courses currently available.
The different attractions suit different interests: the Boire des Carrés focuses on river habitats and nature trails, La Cristallière brings together minerals, fossils and jewellery, and the Tour de Rollat recalls the history of the castle. When planning, also compare the seasonal and weather-related restrictions specified here. This will help you tailor your search for a hotel in Saint-Rémy-en-Rollat to the visits that interest you during your stay.
