Buxières-Les-Mines can be explored through several specific themes: its year-round weekly market, Romanesque heritage, traces of earlier transport and settlement history, and trails through the bocage landscape. When planning a stay, you can choose different points of focus: Wednesday morning at the market, historic buildings and archaeological evidence, or a hike with a known route profile. These themes involve different timing and practical considerations.

Weekly Market and Historic Sites

The weekly market takes place on Place Louis Ganne every Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. throughout the year. If you would like to combine your stay with a visit to the market, Wednesday morning is the key time. As market hours may change, check the current schedule before your trip.

The Church of Saint-Maurice is Romanesque in style. It was partly built in the second half of the 12th century and completed in the 13th century; it was designated a historic monument in 1886. Visitor information updated on December 24, 2025, describes a self-guided tour of the church with an information leaflet. Check before your visit whether this option is still available. Remains of a prehistoric settlement were found in the small Four du Sauvage cave. Château de la Condemine is a former Templar site; its polygonal structure is protected by a water-filled moat. Individual guided tours are available on request.

Railway history is also part of the local story. The Moulins–Cosne industrial railway line opened in stages in 1886 and 1887; the Buxières–Cosne section followed on October 13, 1887. The historical points of interest therefore span prehistoric settlement traces, medieval architectural history and a 19th-century industrial connection.

Bocage Landscape and Trails

Numerous trails and paths cross the valleys and hills of Buxières-Les-Mines. Along the way, you can discover the green bocage landscape and its well-preserved natural environment. One named spot along these paths is the Creux de la Mare waterfall, located on the Vallée des Rocs trail beyond the quarry.

The marked Vallée des Rocs trail has some steep sections. At the river crossing, a temporary bridge formed by a fallen tree is used. If you plan to take this route, bear both features in mind and check the current trail conditions in advance.

The Circuit des Terres Premières – PR 15 is described as a 16-kilometre circular route, marked in yellow and listed with 139 metres of elevation gain. The stated duration is 3 hours and 15 minutes. The circuit follows the former route of the Moulins–Cosne Tacot railway; here, the route and industrial heritage come together along a specific trail. Trail information may change, so check the latest route details before setting out.

The two trails can be assessed using different details: for the Vallée des Rocs, the focus is on the steep sections and temporary river crossing, while for the PR 15, it is on the distance, elevation gain and stated duration. These differences can help you plan your hike according to the time you have available and the features of each trail.

Fishing at Étang communal de la Chassagne

Fishing at Étang communal de la Chassagne is possible with an annual or day permit. Each permit allows three fishing rods per person. As permits and rules may change, check the current conditions before fishing. This gives you several fixed points to consider when planning your stay: the Wednesday market, individual Château tours on request, and the stated conditions for hiking and fishing.
