Autry-Issards brings together a cultural and historical focus, a signposted circular trail and a fishing pond. Its architectural history includes the Église de la Sainte-Trinité, two castles and the former Saint-Maurice priory; there is also a designated picnic area at Étang - Autry-Issards. This offers distinct interests in architectural history, hiking and fishing. If you are planning a stay, you can prioritise these according to your interests.

Église de la Sainte-Trinité: Architectural Features and Dating

The Église de la Sainte-Trinité is classified as a Monument historique. The lower sections of its nave date from the 11th century. The nave is the main lengthwise space of a church; the dating refers to its lower section. Its architectural features include elements of Burgundian Romanesque style, sculpted capitals and an octagonal stone spire. Octagonal means eight-sided. The stylistic references, sculpted capitals and shape of the spire offer different starting points for an architectural interpretation. Its classification as a Monument historique adds heritage status to this architectural perspective.

Castle Construction Phases and Surviving Features

The castles have different historical reference points. Château du Plessis was built in June 1497. Château d'Issards has a main construction phase in the late 15th century and a secondary phase in the third quarter of the 19th century. Only the residential tower and the adjoining ceremonial staircase survive from its 15th-century construction. The construction phases describe the history of how the building came into being, while the surviving features identify precisely what remains of the older structure. Château d'Issards was partially listed as a Monument historique on 26 December 1968 and listed again on 9 April 2001. This makes it possible to compare the specific construction date of Plessis with Issards’ multi-phase history and state of preservation.

The Former Saint-Maurice Priory

The former Saint-Maurice priory adds an early monastic connection to the history of the area. The priory church and outbuildings came into the possession of the Cluniacs around the year 1000. The transept, apse and smaller apses are listed as Monuments historiques; the listing order is dated 6 June 1933. A transept runs across the nave; smaller apses are called apsidioles. Two dates come together in the historical context here: the Cluniacs’ ownership around 1000 and the 1933 order listing the architectural features.

Circular Trail and Fishing Pond

The Circuit de La Rouche Coupée – PR 13 is a signposted circular trail marked in yellow. It is 13 km long, with 106 m of positive elevation gain; the stated duration is 2 hours and 30 minutes. Distance, elevation gain and time complement one another as planning measures: the distance indicates the route’s extent, while the duration provides a clear reference for planning your day. You can use these details to compare the circular trail with other plans for your stay.

At Étang - Autry-Issards, fishing is possible with annual permits or permits for half a day, a day or the holiday period. The pond is a second-category fishing site on a closed body of water. The different permit periods make it easier to choose according to how much time you plan to spend fishing. Since the terms may change, check the current conditions for your chosen permit type in advance. There is also a designated picnic area.
