Bánovce Nad Bebravou: Churches, Monuments and City History
Accommodation in Bánovce Nad Bebravou
At the foot of the Strážovské vrchy and at the confluence of the Radiša and Bebrava streams, Bánovce nad Bebravou combines a distinctive setting with a rich cultural history. Religious buildings, memorial sites, an indoor swimming pool and information panels in the surrounding landscape offer different ways to enjoy your stay.
City History and Crafts
The city was first mentioned in writing as Villa Ben in 1232. In the Middle Ages, Bánovce nad Bebravou was a center of cloth-making, shoemaking and weaving. Its cultural history therefore began not only with the construction of churches, but also with medieval trade and crafts. Fifteen cultural monuments from Bánovce nad Bebravou and its four adjacent districts are listed in the Central Register of Monuments in Bratislava. They are spread across several locations, and visiting conditions may vary.
Churches and Sacred Architecture
The Gothic Church of St. Nicholas the Bishop stands on a small hill in the northeastern part of the city. Its architectural origins date back to the first third of the 15th century. Its features include a neoclassical altar of St. Nicholas from the late 18th century and original crypts in the basement. Gothic origins and later classical furnishings give this building several distinct historical layers.
The Church of the Holy Trinity was built in the Neoclassical style in 1803. In 1929, it received a Nativity scene carved by B. Rek from Kutná Hora. Beside the church stands a Baroque Marian column erected in 1712. To the west is a rectory on the site of an older rectory, which was demolished in 1794. The former rectory originally housed a polychrome late Gothic wooden relief, considered one of the finest examples of late Gothic sculpture in Slovakia.
Memorial Sites and Architectural Heritage
The former synagogue was built in the Historicist style in 1862 and is now used as the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession. Access is subject to local religious and visitor regulations.
The Janko Jesenský Memorial House commemorates the ten years from 1905 to 1914 when the Slovak writer and politician lived and worked in Bánovce nad Bebravou. A memorial plaque with a bronze bust by academic sculptor M. Tomášek is mounted on the house. Created in 1936 by academic sculptor Jozef Pospíšil, the Ľudovít Štúr monument is still considered the first and largest monument to Ľudovít Štúr in Slovakia. In Horné Ozorovce, the Ottlý family manor house was converted in 1693 into a small fortress with a moat, drawbridge and watchtower.

The indoor swimming pool in Bánovce nad Bebravou has a 38 °C relaxation pool with massage features and a 25-meter swimming pool. It also offers the public individual swimming lessons. Since operating and booking conditions may change, it is best to check them before your visit.
